Jon Landau, the influential producer behind some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters, including Titanic and the Avatar series, has died at the age of 63 after a courageous battle with cancer. His death on July 5, 2024, marks the end of an era in cinematic history.
Jon Landau’s Illustrious Career in Film Production
Jon Landau’s career was marked by significant achievements and collaborations with legendary director James Cameron. Landau’s work on Titanic in 1997 broke new ground in cinema, making it the first film to surpass $1 billion in global box office sales. This monumental success was followed by the groundbreaking release of Avatar in 2009, and its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022, both of which continued to set new records.
At just 29 years old, Landau became the Executive Vice President for Feature Film Production at Twentieth Century Fox. During his tenure, he oversaw notable productions such as Die Hard 2, Power Rangers, Last of the Mohicans (1992), and True Lies (1994), marking the beginning of his long-term collaboration with Cameron. After leaving Fox, Cameron invited him to join a project initially called Planet Ice, which later became the iconic Titanic.
Landau‘s contributions extended beyond film production. As the COO at Lightstorm Entertainment, he was instrumental in supervising various ancillary projects, including Dark Horse Comics’ and Penguin Random House’s print spinoffs from Avatar. He also consulted on Ubisoft’s Avatar game, Frontiers of Pandora, and Tencent’s online game, Avatar: Reckoning. His other notable producing credits include Campus Man (1987), Solaris (2002), and Alita: Battle Angel (2019).
In a 2022 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Landau emphasized his hands-on approach to filmmaking. He stated, “I could never just sit at a desk and sign off on anything. Not just as a producer, but in life. I want to participate, I want to have a voice, I want to have an influence.”

The entertainment industry has expressed deep sorrow at the loss of Jon Landau. Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman praised Landau’s visionary work and its lasting impact on the movie industry. Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh of Wētā FX, who collaborated with Landau on Avatar, remembered him as a dear friend and an invaluable colleague.
Joe Letteri, a VFX supervisor, noted that Landau created films that will always be remembered, while Stephen Rivkin, an editor, highlighted Landau’s significant influence both professionally and personally within the Avatar series.
Born on July 30, 1960, in New York, Jon Landau was the son of Ely and Edie Landau, who were also involved in film production. He studied at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts and went on to leave an indelible mark on the industry.
Landau is survived by his wife, Julie, and their two children, Jamie and Jodie. He is also survived by his three sisters, Tina, Kathy, and Les.
