Meanwhile, Randy and Tex identified a suspicious house that appeared to be connected to Joe’s location. They were closer than they realized. Joe remained somewhere around the Houston area, and the team effectively passed near the place where she was being held without rescuing her.

The Real Villain Behind Joe’s Kidnapping Is Finally Revealed
The biggest reveal in “Sugar Land” came when viewers learned who actually took Joe. For most of Season 3, the show made it appear as though Russian operatives were responsible for Joe’s kidnapping. But Episode 6 revealed that Iran has been behind her abduction all along.
The episode introduced Babat, played by Kamyar Jahan, a mysterious and sadistic operative who is almost certainly Iranian. Babat spoke Farsi and told Joe that he had come to take her to her death. His appearance connected Joe’s current situation to earlier operations involving Iran and made clear that her captors have a personal reason for targeting her.
The kidnapping ties back to a mission from Lioness Season 2. At the end of the second season, Joe, her team, and the U.S. military intercepted a motorcade carrying Chinese scientists on Iranian soil. The scientists were being transported to support Iran’s nuclear program, but Joe and her team made sure that never happened. This mission led to Joe’s kidnapping in Season 3.
Oleksandra Provides the Key Intel That Changes Everything
Kyle McManus finally tracked down Oleksandra Balakin, the Ukrainian double agent who had been placed in witness protection. She was living in Tulsa, Oklahoma, under the assumed name Paige Weaver.
Kyle told Oleksandra that Russian contract agents took Joe, but she insisted Russia wouldn’t risk a direct confrontation with the United States. She asked whether Joe had ever led a successful mission against Iran, and the look on Kyle’s face said it all.
“The greater success her operation had, the more motivated Iran would be to act against her. Iran’s foreign policy is revenge and perception of strength. If you burn Iran bad enough, Iran is gonna want to burn back.”
Oleksandra added that if a Russian officer were helping Iran carry out the kidnapping, the plan would likely involve flying Joe out of the country from Houston. This intel sent the team racing toward Texas.
Operation Treasure Delivers a Major Victory in the Past Timeline
The episode’s six-months-earlier storyline showed just how badly Joe misread the apparent success of Operation Treasure. The operation produced 37 arrests while Russian diplomats connected to the operation were expelled from the country.
But Senator Ryan Olson presented a more complicated problem. The compromised senator was confronted by Joe, Kaitlyn, Byron, and Secretary of State Edwin Mullins, who made it clear that his political career was effectively over. Olson had been receiving money from Russian contacts through different accounts and companies.
Faced with the consequences of his betrayal, Olson ultimately chose suicide rather than face what came next. He crashed his car into a truck and died immediately. Joe and her team had little sympathy for a man they considered a traitor.
The arrests and expulsions convinced Joe that the immediate danger had passed. She told her family they could finally breathe and return to a more normal life. That assumption would prove catastrophic.
