The former bandmates are starring in a new three-part documentary series for Netflix that will follow them on a road trip across the United States, offering a personal look into their lives and renewed friendship.
The Concept of the Series
The upcoming Netflix series will document Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson on a spontaneous adventure across the US. Described as a project centered on “reconnection, exploration and a lot of laughter,” the show promises to be a deeply personal journey.
A synopsis from their representatives states that the series is a “rare look inside the world of two of the most famous — and most private — men on the planet opening up about life, loss and fatherhood.” This indicates that viewers will see the artists in a way they rarely have before. The docuseries is planned as a three-part event.
Production and Release Details
The documentary has a strong creative team behind it. It will be directed by Nicola Marsh, known for her work on the Demi Lovato documentary Child Star, as well as Song Exploder and Stay on Board: The Leo Baker Story.
Production is being handled by Campfire Studios, the company behind documentaries like Unknown Number: The High School Catfish and Smartless: On the Road. While an exact premiere date is not yet set, multiple reports confirm that the series is expected to land on Netflix in 2026. Filming has reportedly already begun, with the pair spotted together in Nashville.
A Friendship Rekindled
This collaboration is particularly significant given the history between Malik and Tomlinson. After Zayn’s high-profile departure from One Direction in 2015, the two had a public disagreement on social media.
The road trip series will mark their first time working together on screen since those events and signals a clear reconciliation. They have been spotted publicly together several times in recent months, including attending each other’s concerts, showing their relationship has healed. When recently asked about the rumors of a joint project, Louis Tomlinson gave a coy response, saying, > “I heard that. I thought that was pretty interesting, pretty astute. I just supposed they’d have to wait and see.”
Remembering Liam Payne
The context of this reunion is deeply connected to a shared tragedy. The series is expected to feature the former bandmates discussing the death of their fellow One Direction member, Liam Payne, who died in October 2024.
Payne’s passing had a profound impact on all the former members of the group. Malik and Tomlinson, along with Harry Styles and Niall Horan, reunited at Payne’s funeral in November 2024 and released a joint statement calling themselves “completely devastated” and treasuring the memories they shared. This shared experience of loss is likely to be a central topic of their conversations during the road trip.
Where Are They Now?
Both artists have built successful solo careers since their time in One Direction. Zayn Malik has released four solo albums, including his recent Room Under the Stairs. He has also announced a Las Vegas residency set for January 2026.
Louis Tomlinson is preparing for the release of his third studio album, How Did I Get Here?, on January 23. He has described it as “the record I always deserved to make.” He will follow the album with a world arena tour launching in the summer of 2026.
While this series brings two-fifths of One Direction back together, it has been confirmed that the other former members, Harry Styles and Niall Horan, are not expected to make appearances in the docuseries.
