After years of uncertainty about the future of the popular pirate franchise, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that Margot Robbie is still involved in the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie. The update came during a recent industry conference, where Bruckheimer explained that the team is carefully working on the script to get the adventure right.
The Two Scripts and the Path Forward
For a while, two different Pirates of the Caribbean movies were in development at Disney. One was a project built around Margot Robbie, and the other was a separate story. Jerry Bruckheimer recently clarified what happened to these two ideas.
He explained that the team had two scripts but decided to move forward with only one. When asked if the Robbie project was the one that was dropped, Bruckheimer stated, โWell, sheโs still involved.โ This confirms that the film moving forward is the one that includes the Barbie star, though her exact role has not been detailed.
Bruckheimer stressed the importance of a solid script, saying, โWeโre working on a script. Itโs always on the page; if we donโt have it on the page, itโs not gonna get on the screen.โ
The Creative Team Behind the New Adventure
The new film has some familiar talent from the original franchise working behind the scenes. Ted Elliott, who co-wrote the first four Pirates of the Caribbean movies, has been involved with the current script.
Bruckheimer noted that Elliott โworked on it, and weโve brought someone else in to fill in the blanks,โ indicating that additional writers are also contributing to the project. The last film, Dead Men Tell No Tales, was written by Jeff Nathanson, who was also previously reported to be working on a reboot for the franchise.
The Question of Johnny Deppโs Return
A major question for many fans has been whether Johnny Depp will return as the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow. Bruckheimerโs recent comments did not mention Depp, leading to speculation that the new film may move forward without the original star.
The actorโs well-publicized legal battles had previously complicated his relationship with Disney. While Bruckheimer has expressed a desire to work with Depp again in the past, the focus of this latest update is squarely on the new direction with Margot Robbie.
A Franchise Setting Sail Again
The Pirates of the Caribbean film series began in 2003 with The Curse of the Black Pearl. It grew into a five-film series that earned over $4.5 billion at the global box office. The last installment, Dead Men Tell No Tales, was released in 2017, making it eight years since fans have had a new adventure.
The confirmation of Margot Robbie’s continued involvement signals a fresh start for the beloved franchise, aiming to bring its signature spirit of adventure to a new generation.
