The third episode of Marshals arrived on Sunday, March 15, and it brought with it a fresh wave of trouble for Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes). While the episode showed Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) using tactics straight out of John Dutton’s playbook to protect the Broken Rock Reservation from a new mine, the bigger story was the introduction of a family that has apparently been a problem for the Duttons for a very long time.
Viewers finally got to see the Clegg family in action, and it is already clear that Randall Clegg (Michael Cudlitz) and his kin are going to make life very difficult for Kayce. The episode, titled “Road to Nowhere,” ended with a clear warning for the former Yellowstone ranch owner, suggesting this new rivalry is just getting started.
Who Are the Cleggs and Why Are They Targeting Kayce
The conflict in Episode 3 started when Rainwater’s people blew up a highway to stop trucks from reaching a new mine site. This forced the mining trucks and local ranchers to reroute through Broken Rock land, where Rainwater stopped them for trespassing. When the Marshals showed up to keep the peace, Kayce came face to face with Randall Clegg, a man who represents a family with deep roots in Montana.
Randall immediately started giving Kayce a hard time about selling the family land back to the reservation. According to Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel), the Cleggs have been around almost as long as the Duttons, but they never held the same level of power and influence. This history of being second to the Duttons seems to be the source of their anger.
The show’s executive producer, Spencer Hudnut, explained the role of the Clegg family in a recent interview. He stated that Randall Clegg is going to become a “very large thorn in Kayce’s side” throughout the season. Hudnut described the Cleggs as a family similar to the Duttons in terms of how long they have been in Montana, but they exist on the other side of the social ladder. “The Clegg family were thorns in the Duttons’ side in the past,” Hudnut said, confirming that this is not a new conflict but a very old one that is now resurfacing.
The Clegg Brothers Take Violent Action
The tension at the roadblock quickly turned violent when gunshots rang out from the nearby woods, hitting two innocent young girls. While the Marshals first arrested a rancher named Don Moore (Michael Reagan), they soon learned that the real shooters were still out there.
Under pressure from Marshal Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos), Don revealed that the shooters were the Clegg brothers, Carson and Wes Clegg. It turned out that the Cleggs held the rock-blasting contract for the mine near Broken Rock. If the mine project went ahead, they stood to make a lot of money. Rainwater’s efforts to block the mine were directly threatening their paycheck, giving them a strong reason to try and remove him from the picture.
The Marshals tracked the brothers into the forest, leading to a firefight. During the confrontation, Kayce shot and killed Carson Clegg, who fell into a ravine, while the team arrested Wes Clegg. While taking down the immediate threat felt like a win, eliminating one brother likely just poured fuel on the fire with the rest of the Clegg family.
A Warning Left on the Doorstep
The episode did not end with the arrest. After Rainwater visited Kayce at his home to talk about their next move, the night took a dark turn. Kayce was woken by a noise and went outside with his gun, only to find a single rifle bullet sitting on his front porch.
This bullet was a clear and direct threat. Given the events of the day, it is almost certainly connected to the Cleggs. Kayce had just killed one of their own and arrested another. The bullet served as a warning that the Cleggs are not done with Kayce or his family. As Kayce himself had warned his team earlier, the locals do not tend to forget, and this message proved just how personal the fight had become.

What This New Rivalry Means Going Forward
The introduction of the Cleggs adds a new layer of danger for Kayce. In the original Yellowstone series, the Duttons always had enemies, but they usually had the power of the ranch behind them. Now, Kayce lives on a smaller piece of land and works as a federal lawman, which might make him more vulnerable.
Randall Clegg, played by Michael Cudlitz, is still out there, and he now has even more reason to go after Kayce. With the mine conflict still unresolved and blood now shed between the families, this rivalry is poised to be a central conflict for the rest of the season.
Marshals airs Sundays at 8/7c on CBS. For viewers in the UK, the show is available on Paramount+. Viewers in Canada can watch it on CBS and the Paramount+ app, while audiences in Australia and India can stream it on Paramount+ as well.
