The upcoming Yellowstone sequel series has a new name. Marshals, the show following Luke Grimes’ character Kayce Dutton, will launch on March 1, 2026. The series was originally promoted to fans as Y: Marshals. CBS confirmed the official change to the shorter title, stating the “Y” was always considered a silent part of the name. The show’s logo will still include the distinctive “Y” branding from the Yellowstone franchise.
The change follows a pattern for the franchise. The prequel series 1883 also started with a “Y:” in its working title before it launched.
The Story Continues for Kayce Dutton
The new series picks up after the events of the Yellowstone finale. Kayce Dutton has left the ranch life behind. He sold the Dutton family land and is now joining an elite unit of U.S. Marshals in Montana. The story will combine his background as a cowboy with his past skills as a Navy SEAL.
“With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana,” reads the official description.
The show will explore Kayce balancing his dangerous job with his duties as a father. Brecken Merrill returns as Kayce’s son, Tate Dutton. Two other familiar faces from Yellowstone are also confirmed: Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater and Mo Brings Plenty as Mo.
A major question for fans is the status of Kayce’s wife, Monica, played by Kelsey Asbille. She was not included in the main cast announcement for Marshals. Showrunner Spencer Hudnut hinted that her absence will be a key part of the story, affecting Kayce’s relationship with his son.
New Cast and Team Join the Yellowstone Universe
Alongside the returning characters, Marshals introduces a new team of U.S. Marshals working with Kayce. The cast includes Arielle Kebbel as Belle, Ash Santos as Andrea, and Tatanka Means as Miles. Logan Marshall-Green plays Pete Calvin, a friend from Kayce’s military service. Brett Cullen will appear in a recurring role as Harry Gifford, the head of the U.S. Marshals in Montana.
While Taylor Sheridan created the Yellowstone universe, he is not the day-to-day showrunner for Marshals. That role belongs to Spencer Hudnut, who previously ran the CBS series SEAL Team. Sheridan remains an executive producer on the series.
Luke Grimes shared that the idea for his character’s continuation was pitched to him months after Yellowstone finished filming. He wanted to ensure the new story was compelling for audiences.
