Marvel Studios has officially postponed the release dates of two highly awaited Avengers movies. Avengers: Doomsday will now open on December 18, 2026, instead of May 1, 2026. Its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, has been moved to December 17, 2027, from its original May 7, 2027 date. The delay gives filmmakers more time to complete the massive productions.
The shift means fans must wait seven extra months for the next Avengers adventures. Disney has replaced the May 2026 slot with The Devil Wears Prada 2, ensuring the summer season remains packed. The decision follows Marvelโs recent strategy to prioritize quality over rushed releases.
Avengers: Doomsday is currently filming in London. The movie brings together heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and Foxโs X-Men franchise. Robert Downey Jr. returns as Doctor Doom, not Iron Man, marking a major twist. The cast includes Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), and newcomers like Pedro Pascal (Mister Fantastic).
Marvelโs December release strategy has worked before. Spider-Man: No Way Home earned nearly $2 billion after its December 2021 debut. The studio hopes the holiday season will boost box office numbers for both Avengers films.
The delay also affects Marvelโs 2026-2027 schedule. Only two confirmed MCU movies remain for 2026: Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31) and Avengers: Doomsday (December 18). Other untitled Marvel projects have been removed or rescheduled.
“If weโre going to bring Doctor Doom to the screenโhe is one of the most complex characters in all of fictionโthen we need the greatest actor in the world,” said director Joe Russo at Comic-Con 2024. Downey Jr. added, “Same mask, new task.”
The massive cast includes X-Men stars like Patrick Stewart (Professor X) and Ian McKellen (Magneto). Thunderbolts* members, such as Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova) and Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), will also appear. However, key names like Tom Holland (Spider-Man) and Chris Evans (Captain America) are missing from the confirmed list.
Marvelโs recent delays reflect lessons learned from past rushed projects. Films like The Marvels underperformed, prompting the studio to slow down. Fewer releases per year now allow more focus on each filmโs quality.
The new dates place Avengers: Doomsday against Ice Age 6 and a week after Jumanji 3. Secret Wars will face competition from other holiday blockbusters. Both movies are expected to be among Marvelโs most expensive and ambitious productions.
Fans expressed mixed reactions online. Some are disappointed by the wait, while others believe the extra time will improve the films. Marvel has not yet revealed full plot details but promises a multiverse-spanning story.
Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 2025) will introduce key characters before Avengers: Doomsday. The team includes Pascal, Vanessa Kirby (Invisible Woman), and Joseph Quinn (Human Torch). Their roles will likely expand in the Avengers sequels.
Marvelโs next big announcement is expected at San Diego Comic-Con in July. More casting news, including potential returns of Spider-Man and Wolverine, could be revealed. Until then, the studio is focused on perfecting these epic team-up films.
