The animated zombie universe at Marvel is expanding. Brad Winderbaum, the head of streaming, television, and animation at Marvel Studios, just gave fans a major reason to get excited about Marvel Zombies Season 2. During a recent podcast appearance, he shared that he has already watched early footage from the new episodes and promised something the MCU has never done before.
This update arrives as the first season of Marvel Zombies continues to find its audience on Disney+. The show, which debuted in September 2025, is a spin-off from the popular What If…? episode. It takes place in a dark alternate reality where a plague turns Earth’s mightiest heroes into ravenous, super-powered zombies.
Brad Winderbaum Confirms Work On New Episodes Has Started
The update came from Winderbaum himself on an episode of The Escape Pod podcast. While the studio has not yet made a traditional public announcement, Winderbaum confirmed that production on the second season is actively moving forward.
He revealed that the creative team has moved past just talking about ideas. They have already created an animatic, which is a rough sequence of images used to plan out the action and timing for an animated show.
“I saw the first animatic of the first episode of Marvel Zombies season 2 this morning. It was crazy, I can’t say anything about it, but it delivers not just on like zombies, but also on like an MCU thing that has never really happened before that we’re very excited to do.”
This statement confirms that the show is not just being discussed in meetings; actual production work is happening right now.
What The MCU First Could Mean For The Story
Winderbaum’s tease about an “MCU thing that has never really happened before” has naturally started many conversations among viewers. The first season of Marvel Zombies was already a big change for Marvel animation. It earned a TV-MA rating for its violent and scary tone, which was a first for the studio.
The first season ended on a big cliffhanger. The finale saw Wanda Maximoff, voiced by Elizabeth Olsen, using her powers to trap Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel, voiced by Iman Vellani) in a fake reality. The story left many questions unanswered about who survived and what the world looks like after the zombie outbreak.
Because of this ending, season two has a lot of freedom to go in wild directions. Winderbaum’s comment suggests the new episodes will break new ground for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whether this involves the multiverse in a fresh way or introduces a new type of storytelling remains to be seen, but it is clear the team is trying to surprise the audience.
Star-Studded Voice Cast Expected To Return
The first Marvel Zombies season had an impressive list of actors returning to voice their famous characters. Even though no official cast list for season two exists yet, it is likely the main surviving characters will come back.

The first season featured Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, and Awkwafina as Katy Chen. Dominique Thorne also voiced Riri Williams (Ironheart).
Since the ending focused heavily on Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel and Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, these two are expected to play major roles in the second season. The showrunners Bryan Andrews and Zeb Wells, who created the series and wrote the stories, are expected to return as well.
Release Expectations For Season 2
As of April 2026, Disney+ has not set a specific release date for Marvel Zombies Season 2. Animation takes a long time to produce. Because Winderbaum has only just seen the first animatic, the show is still in the early stages of production.
Given the usual timeline for high-quality animation, new episodes will likely not arrive until late 2026 or sometime in 2027. The first season consisted of four episodes, and it is likely the second season will follow a similar short but packed format.
In the meantime, viewers can still watch the first season exclusively on Disney+ to catch up on the zombie chaos before the new episodes arrive.
