The new Taylor Sheridan series The Madison finally arrived on Paramount+ on March 14, bringing with it a wave of emotion, stunning Montana landscapes, and a cast full of familiar faces. Among them is Matthew Fox, the Lost alum making a major return to television after years away from the spotlight. His character, Paul Clyburn, initially comes across as a quiet, outdoorsy bachelor who finds peace fly-fishing on the river. But Fox is now teasing that there is much more to Paul than what viewers have seen in the first three episodes.
As the show releases its first half, the actor is opening up about Paul’s hidden depths, the painful losses that shaped him, and the major revelations still to come when the season continues.
Who Is Paul Clyburn? Matthew Fox Explains His Character’s Quiet Pain
In The Madison, Paul Clyburn lives a solitary life on a rustic ranch near the Madison River in Montana. He spends his days outdoors, finding comfort in nature and the meditative rhythm of fly fishing. When the series opens, Paul is visited by his older brother Preston (Kurt Russell) , and the two share a peaceful day on the water, talking about life and the years ahead.
But that calm is shattered when their small plane crashes on the way back from a fishing trip, killing both brothers instantly. The tragedy forces Preston’s wife Stacy (Michelle Pfeiffer) and their adult daughters to leave their luxurious New York City lives behind and travel to Montana to face their loss.
Through flashbacks, viewers learn that Paul was not always this quiet, nature-loving man. He once lived in New York and worked in the high-stakes world of finance, just like his brother.
“He was a killer. He made a ton of money. He was doing incredibly well in that measure of success,” Fox explained in a recent interview with UPI.
So what changed? Fox reveals that a random, devastating event completely altered Paul’s path.
“This really random event happens, and he loses this person that’s the most important person in the world to him and I think that fundamentally just completely changes him.”
That loss is why Paul now lives alone in Montana. The Madison River is not just a pretty backdrop for him—it is a place of healing. “Paul is a guy that has had some really intense loss in his life and I think finds himself on the Madison River because it’s a place where he can honor this person that he lost in the past by the way that he’s living his life,” Fox told UPI.
‘He’s Constantly Trying to Pull Preston In There More’
The bond between the two brothers is at the heart of the show’s early episodes. Even though Paul chose to leave the fast-paced city life behind, he never stopped wanting his brother to join him.
Matthew Fox described their relationship as deeply authentic. “Preston is one of the only people in the world that he feels he can be himself with. He can kind of let his guard down a little bit around his older brother,” he said.
In the flashbacks, Paul is always trying to get Preston to stay longer, to experience more of the life he has built. “He’s the one who’s really deeply attached to the Madison and to this place and he’s constantly trying to pull Preston in there more,” Fox added.
That pull is what ultimately leads to the plane crash. Preston decided to stay an extra day for a trip to a remote area called the Big Lost, a decision that cost both men their lives.
Matthew Fox on Returning to TV: ‘I Kind of Missed Storytelling’
For longtime fans of Matthew Fox, his role in The Madison is a welcome return. After Lost ended in 2010, Fox largely stepped away from Hollywood. He appeared in a few films but then disappeared from the screen for years.
Now, he is opening up about why he took that time off. In a recent interview with Variety, Fox explained that the demanding schedule of Lost made him miss important moments with his family.
“I felt like it was time to engage really intensely with my family. I had missed some of their childhood because I was on set all the time with Lost and doing films.”
Fox is married to Margherita Ronchi, and they have two children together. Stepping back from acting allowed him to regain balance in his life. “It was the right moment for me to step back and take a moment and engage with the people that I love and care about the most in the world,” he said.
But after several years away, the pull of a good story brought him back. When Taylor Sheridan came calling with The Madison, Fox felt ready.
“I kind of missed storytelling, and this opportunity came along from Taylor [Sheridan], and I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m in.’”
He also admitted that the decision to join the show felt natural from the start. “I loved the character from the moment Taylor started talking to me about him. The scripts are beautiful and that relationship between Paul and Preston just made so much sense to me,” Fox recalled.
Filming in the Cold: ‘You Can See Our Breath’
One of the things that makes The Madison stand out is its commitment to shooting on location. Unlike many shows that rely on sound stages and green screens, this series was filmed in the actual Montana wilderness.
For Matthew Fox, who grew up in nearby Wyoming, that authenticity was a huge draw.
“Even though they do an amazing job of building sets, this is a natural set, and everything feels completely real,” he told UPI.
He recalled shooting a nighttime fishing sequence in freezing temperatures until three or four in the morning. “It was pretty cold and I love that you can see our breath in some of the shots and I love that because there’s an authenticity to it, to where you don’t have to do as much as an actor,” Fox said.
“You just have to be in it. Be in the right emotional place or the emotional place that you feel like you need to start from and then it just has an organic quality to it.”
What’s Coming in the Final Three Episodes?
The first three episodes of The Madison set up a lot of emotional groundwork. Viewers have seen Stacy (Michelle Pfeiffer) struggle with grief, even contemplating suicide before being stopped by a local rancher named Cade (Kevin Zegers) . Her daughter Abigail (Beau Garrett) is navigating a new romance while dealing with her mother’s tough love. And the family is slowly adjusting to life on the ranch.
But Matthew Fox hints that there is still a lot viewers do not know about Paul. Even though the character is gone in the present-day timeline, flashbacks will continue to reveal more about his past and the secrets he carried.
Fox suggested that the loss Paul experienced before the show began is more complicated than it first appears. “He’s the one who’s really deeply attached to the Madison and to this place,” he said, implying that the river holds memories that have not yet been fully explored.
Because Kurt Russell and Matthew Fox filmed their scenes for both Season 1 and the already-completed Season 2 at the same time, there is plenty more footage of the brothers to come. Russell explained to Entertainment Weekly that the production schedule was shifted to accommodate his work on another series, allowing them to shoot two seasons worth of his material back-to-back.
That means even though Paul and Preston died in Episode 1, their presence will continue to loom large over the family, and flashbacks will likely peel back more layers of their shared history.
The Madison and Yellowstone: No Connection, Says Cast
One question has followed The Madison since it was first announced: Is it connected to Yellowstone?
For a long time, the show was billed as a Yellowstone spinoff. Early reports even suggested Matthew McConaughey might lead the project, alongside original Yellowstone cast members. But when the trailer dropped in February 2026, producers confirmed that The Madison is actually not part of the Dutton family saga at all.
Despite that, cast members still seem a bit confused. Michelle Pfeiffer recently said she believes the show exists “within the Yellowstone universe, but it’s its own show.” Kurt Russell went further, saying he would put money on a future crossover. “I’m not going to bet a lot of money, but I’ll put my quarter down. It’ll be interesting to see if somewhere down the road [it connects],” he said.
For now, the official word is that The Madison is a standalone series. There are no Dutton family members, no ranch feuds, and no references to John Dutton or his legacy. The only thing the two shows share is creator Taylor Sheridan and the beautiful Montana backdrop.
How to Watch The Madison

What Fans Are Saying About Matthew Fox’s Return
Early reactions to The Madison have been positive, with many praising Michelle Pfeiffer’s raw performance as a grieving widow. But Matthew Fox’s return has also generated buzz.
Longtime Lost fans are thrilled to see him back on screen, and many appreciate the quieter, more reflective nature of his role as Paul. Unlike the intense, take-charge Jack Shephard, Paul is a man who has retreated from the world, finding peace in solitude.
Social media reactions have noted how Fox brings a sense of calm and mystery to the role. Even in flashbacks, viewers can sense that Paul is carrying something heavy, and they are eager to learn more about the “random event” that changed his life.
With three episodes left in the season, The Madison is poised to deliver more answers about Paul’s past, the secrets of the Clyburn family, and whether they can truly rebuild their lives in Montana.
