The second season of Maxton Hall concluded with a devastating blow for Ruby Bell, as a single misleading photo shattered her academic ambitions and left her relationship with James Beaufort hanging by a thread.
The German-language romantic drama on Amazon Prime Video, which became the platform’s most popular series in over 120 regions, wrapped its six-episode season on November 28. The finale, titled ‘Reaching for the Stars,’ saw Ruby and James’s relationship tested like never before by the relentless schemes of James’s father, Mortimer.
A Twisted Photo and a Shattered Dream
The season’s climax centered on a deceptive photograph. Viewers were led to believe that a picture of teacher Graham Sutton with James’s sister, Lydia, had been exposed. However, in a cruel twist, the photo sent to Headmaster Lexington was an innocent, but misleading, image of Sutton talking with Ruby at a school party.
The image was taken out of context to appear intimate. When questioned, Sutton initially believed he was being accused of a relationship with Lydia and, in a bid to protect her, did not immediately correct the misunderstanding. By the time he realized the error, it was too late.
Just as Ruby was about to sit for her crucial scholarship exam, she was called to the headmaster’s office and suspended from Maxton Hall. The suspension effectively destroyed her dream of studying at Oxford University. Meanwhile, Sutton was arrested by the police, leaving a pregnant Lydia to watch in horror.
Mortimer’s Relentless Revenge
The photo scandal was the culmination of a series of attacks by Mortimer Beaufort, James’s father, who blames Ruby for his son’s rebellion and his company’s troubles. His vengeance was multi-pronged:
- Revoking the Scholarship: Mortimer used his influence to pressure Alice Campbell into withdrawing Ruby’s Oxford scholarship. When James confronted Campbell, she explained she had no choice, as Mortimer’s financial support funded her charity programs for underprivileged children.
- Destroying Family Livelihood: In one of his most ruthless moves, Mortimer arranged for the bakery where Ruby’s mother worked to be sold, leaving her family without a source of income.
- A Contested Will: During the reading of their mother Cordelia’s will, James and Lydia were shocked to learn that everything was left to Mortimer, disinheriting them. The twins and their aunt Ophelia immediately vowed to contest the will, suspecting their father of foul play.
