The truth about Angelo’s past continues to come out in Memory of a Killer’ as the show moves toward its first season finale. Episode 9, titled “Shoot the Piano Player,” revealed key details about a character named Earl Hancock and his connection to the death of Angelo’s wife. With Patrick Dempsey playing the lead role of Angelo, the episode pushed the story forward with high tension as the Ferryman made her final moves.

The March 30 episode brought together multiple storylines. FBI Agent Linda Grant (Gina Torres) was confirmed as the Ferryman earlier in the season, and this episode showed just how far she would go to get revenge on Angelo for killing her son, Dr. Robert Parks.

Earl’s Role in Angelo’s Wife Death

Earl Hancock, played by Ian Matthews, was the man who killed Angelo’s wife in a hit-and-run accident years before the events of the series. The episode revealed that Earl did not act alone. He was working for Linda Grant, the FBI agent who later became known as the Ferryman.

Grant used Earl to carry out her revenge plan. She hired him to take out Angelo’s wife as part of her long-term plot to destroy everything Angelo loved. This explained why Angelo’s wife died years ago in what seemed like a random accident. It was actually a planned killing set up by Grant.

The ninth episode showed Grant meeting with Earl again to give him new orders. She wanted him to go after Maria (Odeya Rush), Angelo’s pregnant daughter. Earl had concerns about getting into Maria’s house, but Grant told him she would handle the security system issues.

Grant’s Plan Against Angelo’s Family

Grant had set up multiple attacks on Angelo’s family members. While Earl went after Maria, she also sent someone to go after Michael (Richard Clarkin), Angelo’s brother who lives in a care facility. She wanted to hurt Angelo by taking away the people closest to him.

Grant’s obsession with Angelo became very clear in this episode. Her home had a wall covered with research and information about him. She had replaced her drinking problem with a focus on getting revenge.

Nicky (Michaela McManus), Angelo’s love interest, played a key role in Grant’s plan. Grant had been blackmailing Nicky for years. Nicky had killed her abusive husband in self-defense, and Grant used that information to control her. In this episode, Grant forced Nicky to help Earl get into Maria’s house by turning off the alarm system.

How Maria Survived the Attack

Maria was ready when Earl broke into her house. Nicky had warned her before leaving town. She told Maria she was sorry and said she would fix what she had done, though she did not explain everything in the phone call.

When Earl entered Maria’s home, she shot him. He tried to scare her by saying she did not have what it took to kill him. But Maria showed she could protect herself. She shot Earl and went downstairs to call for help.

Earl was still alive and came up behind her. Before he could shoot Maria, her father Angelo arrived and killed Earl. Maria looked at her father with shock and said, “Dad?” realizing for the first time the kind of life he had been living.

What Happened to Michael

Dutch (Michael Imperioli) proved his loyalty to Angelo in this episode. When Angelo told Dutch that someone was coming after his brother, Dutch immediately sent protection. He hired a new nurse to watch over Michael at the care facility.

When Angelo got to the facility after dealing with Earl, he found a dead body in the rec room. The piano player had been killed. But Michael was safe because of the protection Dutch had put in place.

Angelo had questioned whether he could trust Dutch after Dutch failed to know that Parks was innocent. But Dutch told Angelo he had been protecting him and his brother from the very beginning.

Key Details About Earl Hancock

The character Earl is a hired killer who worked for Grant. He killed Angelo’s wife years ago in what was made to look like a hit-and-run accident. This was not a random event but a planned attack tied to Angelo’s past work as a hitman.

Earl’s full name was given as Earl Hancock in the episode’s credits and promotional materials. He was brought back by Grant to finish the job by targeting Maria, showing how Grant wanted to use the same person who killed Angelo’s wife to also kill his daughter.
