The Four New Mysteries Coming to Midsomer
Season 25 will consist of four self-contained stories, each presenting DCI John Barnaby and DS Jamie Winter with a uniquely bizarre case to solve. The episode titles and brief descriptions hint at the strange dangers lurking in the county’s villages.
The first episode, “Treasures of Darkness,” draws the detectives into the secretive world of mudlarkingโsearching riverbanks for historical objects. The discovery of a jar containing human remains points to a deadly feud among treasure hunters. In “Lawn of the Dead,” the peaceful green of a lawn bowling club becomes the setting for murder, exposing hidden rivalries and romances among the team members.
The third mystery, “Death Strikes Three,” begins at an engagement party where a guest is killed by a booby-trapped cuckoo clock, leading Barnaby and Winter through a tangled web of family secrets. The season concludes with “Top of the Class,” where the murder of a strict headteacher during a parent-teacher meeting uncovers a variety of scandals within a local school.

Returning Cast and Familiar Faces
The core team tasked with solving these crimes remains unchanged. Neil Dudgeon returns as the steady and methodical DCI John Barnaby, a role he has held since taking over from John Nettles in Season 14. His partner, DS Jamie Winter, is once again played by Nick Hendrix. Their professional partnership, which blends serious detective work with dry humor, continues to be a central part of the show.
They are supported by the sharp and no-nonsense pathologist Dr. Fleur Perkins, played by Annette Badland. Fiona Dolman reprises her role as Sarah Barnaby, John’s wife, who often provides a grounded perspective from outside the police force. The Barnaby household is rounded out by their daughter Betty and the family dog, Paddy.
“Itโs fantastic to be filming โMidsomerโ again. The scripts are all great, full of intrigue and mysteryโฆ Our writers, who seem so normal, have come up with yet more extraordinary ways for the residents of โMidsomerโ to despatch their neighbors,” said lead actor Neil Dudgeon about returning for the new season.
The series is known for featuring a wide array of guest stars in each episode, though the specific actors for Season 25 have not been officially listed.
Behind the Scenes of the New Season
The new episodes are produced by Bentley Productions for ITV and are based on the Chief Inspector Barnaby book series created by author Caroline Graham. Each of the four episodes has been written and directed by different individuals, bringing varied styles to the season.
The writers for Season 25 are Julia Gilbert (Episode 1), Maria Ward (Episode 2), Jeff Povey (Episode 3), and Helen Jenkins (Episode 4). The directors are Paul Gibson (Episode 1), Roberto Bangura (Episode 2), Darcia Martin (Episode 3), and Matt Carter (Episode 4).
Filming for the 25th season began in the spring of 2024. The show’s future beyond this milestone season looks secure, as ITV announced in October 2025 that a 26th series has already been commissioned.
