The second season of Mr. Robot presented a world changed by the massive 5/9 cyberattack. With consumer debt erased but society in chaos, the characters we knew from Season 1 had to navigate dangerous new realities. This guide breaks down the core cast and the new faces that defined this complex chapter of the story.

The Core Characters and Their New Journeys

The main actors returned to explore their characters in a tense post-hack world. Their roles expanded and their personal struggles deepened.

Rami Malek once again plays Elliot Alderson. Season 2 begins with Elliot trying to build a life of strict routine and control after the traumatic events of the 5/9 hack. He lives with his mother, attends regular therapy sessions, and keeps a detailed journal. His primary goal is to stop his alter ego, Mr. Robot, from taking over his life and actions. He repeatedly writes “I am in control” in his diary as a mantra.

Christian Slater plays Mr. Robot, who is now fully understood by the audience as a part of Elliot’s mind. His role becomes more complex, acting as a protector, an instigator, and a keeper of secrets Elliot cannot face. Most importantly, Mr. Robot holds the truth about what happened during the 72 hours Elliot cannot remember and the fate of Tyrell Wellick. Their relationship turns into an open battle for control of Elliot’s life.

Carly Chaikin plays Darlene Alderson, Elliot’s sister. With the hack complete, Darlene steps up as the new leader of the fsociety hacker group. Her story shows the heavy burden of leadership. She knows the hack did not create a better world and struggles to keep the group focused and safe from the consequences of their actions.

Portia Doubleday returns as Angela Moss. In a surprising move, Angela begins working for E Corp in their public relations department. This decision confuses Elliot and the audience, as E Corp was responsible for her mother’s death. Her storyline explores themes of ambition and moral compromise as she believes she can change the powerful company from within.

Martin Wallstrรถm plays Tyrell Wellick, the former E Corp executive. After the 5/9 hack, Tyrell becomes one of the world’s most wanted men and is missing. His absence and unknown fate create a major mystery that drives much of the season’s suspense.

Major New Additions to the Story

Several actors joined the cast in Season 2, bringing new challenges and perspectives to the show’s world.

Grace Gummer was introduced as Dominique “Dom” DiPierro, a dedicated FBI field agent leading the investigation into the 5/9 hack and fsociety. Her character provides a view from inside the law enforcement effort to find those responsible.

Joey Badass plays Leon, Elliot’s friendly and talkative new friend. Leon shares Elliot’s interests and offers him companionship during a lonely time, though his true motives are not immediately clear.

Craig Robinson appears as Ray Heyworth, a seemingly kind prison warden who takes an interest in Elliot. His character runs a dark website on the dark web, pulling Elliot into a dangerous situation far from computers.

Michael Cristofer takes on a larger role as Phillip Price, the powerful CEO of E Corp. Season 2 shows him managing the immense political and economic fallout from the hack, demonstrating how large corporations survive major crises.

Stephanie Corneliussen continues as Joanna Wellick, Tyrell’s wife. With her husband missing, Joanna maneuvers through her own plans, applying intense pressure on those around her to achieve her goals.

BD Wong returns as the mysterious Whiterose, a powerful cyber-terrorist and leader of the Dark Army hacker group. Whiterose’s influence and long-term plans become more important to the overall story.

Key Returning Supporting Characters

Many actors from Season 1 reprised their roles, adding depth to the unfolding drama.

  • Gloria Reuben as Krista Gordon, Elliot’s therapist.
  • Ron Cephas Jones as Leslie Romero, a member of fsociety. The role was originally played by Michael Buscemi in the first episode of Season 1 before Jones took over.
  • Sunita Mani and Azhar Khan as Trenton and Mobley, members of fsociety working under Darlene’s leadership.
  • Michael Drayer as Cisco, Darlene’s boyfriend and a connection to the Dark Army.

The Story Context of Season 2

Season 2 premiered on July 13, 2016. It directly continues from the Season 1 finale, where the fsociety hack successfully encrypted the debt records of the giant conglomerate E Corp.

The season explores the chaotic aftermath of that attack. Instead of a utopia, the world faces economic instability and increased surveillance. The story spends significant time unraveling the mystery of what Elliot did during the three days he lost after the hack and the search for the missing Tyrell Wellick. New threats emerge from the FBI’s investigation and the manipulations of the secretive Dark Army.
