The live-action adaptation of the popular video game Assassin’s Creed has officially started production. Netflix confirmed that cameras are rolling in Rome, Italy. The series will tell a brand new story set in Ancient Rome during 64 A.D.

This marks a major step for the project, which was first announced back in 2020. The show is being shot at the famous Cinecittà Studios. The production team is expanding the studio’s existing Ancient Rome backlot to bring the historical period to life. Filming began on March 9, 2026, and the schedule runs for about seven months, expected to wrap up on October 16, 2026.

The Show Takes Place During a Pivotal Year in History

The year 64 A.D. is a famous and troubled time for Rome. History records that a massive fire destroyed two-thirds of the city during this period. The fire started near the Circus Maximus, the chariot racing stadium. Emperor Nero was not in the city at the time but was blamed for the disaster.

This setting gives the show a lot of dramatic material. The fire led to the first major persecution of Christians in the city as Nero looked for someone to blame. The following year, in 65 A.D. , a large group of senators tried to kill the emperor in a plot known as the Pisonian conspiracy.

This time period has not been covered in the main video games before. While Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood took place in Rome, that game was set over 1,000 years later during the Renaissance. The Netflix series will be an original story that fits into the gap of the franchise’s timeline.

Netflix Reveals a Large International Cast

The streaming service has put together a large group of actors for the series. Toby Wallace and Lola Petticrew are the main leads. Wallace is known for his work in Babyteeth and the third season of Euphoria. Petticrew recently appeared in Say Nothing.

The list of series regulars also includes Zachary Hart, Laura Marcus, Tanzyn Crawford, Nabhaan Rizwan, and Claes Bang.

The recurring cast includes several well-known names from big action movies. Noomi Rapace, famous for Prometheus and the original The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, has joined the project. Sean Harris, who played the villain Solomon Lane in the Mission: Impossible series, is also part of the cast. French actor and director Ramzy Bedia and Italian actor Corrado Invernizzi (who appeared in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) have also been added.

Recent announcements added four more actors to the lineup. Sandra Guldberg-Kampp from Foundation, Youssef Kerkour from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Mirren Mack, and Louis McCartney from the Stranger Things stage play The First Shadow are all joining the show in recurring roles.

What the Story Is About

The official description for the series explains the main conflict. The show is a high-energy thriller focused on a secret war between two hidden groups. One group wants to control humanity’s future. The other group fights to protect free will. The characters will move through important moments in history while battling for the fate of all people.

The showrunners for the series are Roberto Patino and David Wiener. Patino worked on Westworld and DMZ, while Wiener created Homecoming and worked on Halo. They are also serving as executive producers alongside Gerard Guillemot from Ubisoft and several others.

The creative team is using local Italian talent for the production. Carlo Poggioli, who worked on The Leopard, is designing the costumes. The Italian line producer is Nicola Rosada, who has previously worked with Netflix on The Decameron and Emily in Paris.
