Netflix has announced that the upcoming second season of The Sandman will be its last, marking the conclusion of the fantasy series based on Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed comic books. The decision follows multiple sexual assault allegations against Gaiman, which he has denied.
Netflix’s Announcement
The streaming giant confirmed the news in a social media post, stating, “Dream’s journey has all been building to this. The story of The Sandman comes to its epic conclusion in 2025.”
Showrunner Allan Heinberg explained that the decision to end the series was planned early on. “The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season. We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”
Allegations Against Neil Gaiman
The announcement comes shortly after a New York Magazine report detailed multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against Neil Gaiman. The accusations stem from multiple women who came forward earlier this month.
Gaiman responded to the allegations in a statement on his personal website, denying any non-consensual behavior. “As I read through this latest collection of accounts, there are moments I half-recognize and moments I don’t, descriptions of things that happened sitting beside things that emphatically did not happen,” he wrote. “I’m far from a perfect person, but I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever.”
This is not the first time Gaiman has faced allegations. In July 2024, two women accused him of sexual assault on the U.K.-based podcast Master. He denied those claims as well.
Cast and Previous Seasons
The Sandman premiered on Netflix in 2022, starring Tom Sturridge as Morpheus (Dream), a cosmic entity governing the world of dreams. The cast also includes Boyd Holbrook, Vivienne Acheampong, Patton Oswalt, David Thewlis, Jenna Coleman, Gwendoline Christie, Sandra Oh, and Mark Hamill.
Following its successful debut, the series was renewed for a second season. Gaiman previously hinted at what fans could expect. “We have things coming for you in season 2,” he said in a video. “We have more members of the Endless coming, including the youngest member of the Endless. Don’t tell anybody, but it’s Delirium! There will be butterflies, there will be balloons, there will be magic, there will be chicken and telephone-flavored ice cream.”
Fallout and Other Projects
The controversy surrounding Gaiman has led to significant professional consequences. Dark Horse Comics, which published several of his works, announced it had severed ties with him.
Meanwhile, Good Omens, another series based on Gaiman’s work, will conclude with a single 90-minute finale instead of a full third season. Though Gaiman contributed to the script, he was not involved in production. The show stars Michael Sheen and David Tennant and is based on the novel co-written by Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.
Additionally, Gaiman’s adaptation of Anansi Boys for Amazon Prime Video has been completed since 2022, but a release date has yet to be announced.
