A new video from Netflix shows the lighter side of battling monsters in the Upside Down. The video, focused on Joe Keery’s character Steve Harrington, highlights his repeated mentions of a favorite snack called “Boppers” throughout Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1. The moments offer fans a fun break from the show’s tense storyline.
Steve Harrington’s New Obsession with Boppers
In the new season, Steve Harrington has developed a strong liking for a snack called Boppers. This has quickly become a running joke that fans are talking about. The obsession starts in the first episode when a character named Murray delivers a pack to Steve as part of his essential supplies. Steve’s happy reaction makes it clear these snacks were the only thing he asked for.
The humor continues in later scenes. Steve tries to share a Bopper with Jonathan Byers while they wait for a vehicle to charge. The most memorable moment happens during a dangerous situation. Steve, Nancy, Dustin, and Jonathan are tracking a Demogorgon when it opens a gate to the Upside Down.
Steve comes up with a risky plan to drive through this gate. To explain why it might work, he uses a Bopper as an example. He says the gate is probably crunchy and tough on the outside but soft on the inside, just like the snack. He argues that if they drive fast enough, their car could punch through the hard exterior. Surprisingly, his unusual analogy turns out to be correct, and the plan works.
Food as a Character Trait in Stranger Things
Steve’s love for Boppers follows a pattern in Stranger Things, where food often helps show a character’s personality. The most famous example is Eleven’s connection to Eggo waffles. Her discovery of them at Mike Wheeler’s house in the first season became an important part of her story. In later seasons, she is seen stealing boxes of them, which reminds viewers of her simpler wants and needs.
These food items do more than just show what characters like to eat. They often represent comfort, normal life, or a small piece of happiness during chaotic times. Steve’s excitement over receiving Boppers provides a moment of relief and relatability amidst the supernatural threats facing Hawkins.
A Look Back at Past Blooper Reels
This is not the first time Netflix has shared funny mistakes from the Stranger Things set. A blooper reel for Season 4 was released during the Netflix Tudum fan event in 2022. That collection of outtakes showed the cast having trouble keeping a straight face during serious scenes.
One famous moment from the Season 4 bloopers involved Joe Keery and his on-screen best friend Robin, played by Maya Hawke. In a scene where Robin confesses a crush, the actors repeatedly said the word “boobies” and broke into laughter.
Other cast members had their own funny mistakes. Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven) did a dance in her character’s hazmat suit. David Harbour (Jim Hopper) joked about his shaved head after a scene in a Russian prison. These reels remind fans that even a show about dark alternate dimensions has a lot of laughter behind the scenes.
