The live-action version of Avatar: The Last Airbender is making a return to Netflix with a new structure and big story changes. New information confirms Season 2 will have seven episodes, one fewer than the first season. However, the total time for the season is expected to be longer than Season 1’s 430 minutes. Along with the episode count, the official episode titles have been shared, showing that the story will move through the Earth Kingdom in a different order than the original animated series.

The show is set to return in 2026. The core cast, including Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, and Ian Ousley as Sokka, are all coming back. They will be joined by new cast members like Miya Cech, who will play the fan-favorite earthbender Toph Beifong.

Season 2 Episode Titles and Writers

The full list of episodes for the upcoming season has been revealed. The titles give clues about where the story is heading.

  • Episode 1: Somewhere Safe (Written by Christine Boylan)
  • Episode 2: A Fight, Once Begun (Written by Phinneas Kiyomura)
  • Episode 3: City of Walls and Secrets (Written by Helen Shang)
  • Episode 4: The Water Falls, the Stones Emerge (Written by Teresa Huang)
  • Episode 5: Ten Thousand Things (Written by Gabriel Llanas)
  • Episode 6: The Parable of the Two Dragons (Written by Keely MacDonald)
  • Episode 7: Something Broken (Written by Christine Boylan & Gabriel Llanas)

A Major Timeline Shift for the Earth Kingdom Story

A significant change in Season 2 involves the order of events from the original cartoon. In the animated series, Aang and his friends spend much of the season traveling before they finally reach the giant Earth Kingdom city of Ba Sing Se. In the live-action version, they will arrive at this city much earlier.

The third episode is titled City of Walls and Secrets, which is the name of the episode in the original show where the group enters Ba Sing Se. This means the live-action story will get to this major location in the first half of the season.

“We are going to show the real-world versions of iconic scenes from the original, and explore some of the stories that the animation didn’t,” executive producers Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani told Netflix’s Tudum.

This change is partly due to production. Building the large sets for Ba Sing Se was very expensive, so the show will use them more during the season to make the most of them.

What the Episode Titles Tell Us About the Story

The episode titles hint at other key story moments and character introductions. The title A Fight, Once Begun references a line from the Earthbending academy in the original show. This suggests that Toph Beifong will join Aang’s group early in the season.

Another title, Ten Thousand Things, points to the knowledge spirit Wan Shi Tong, whose name means “He who knows ten thousand things”. This confirms that the story arc involving Wan Shi Tong’s library will happen in the middle of the season. In the original show, visiting the library happened before going to Ba Sing Se. Changing this order will affect a major emotional story involving Aang’s flying bison, Appa.

The final episode is called Something Broken. This likely points to the season’s major, dramatic ending, which in the original story involved the fall of Ba Sing Se and a serious crisis for the Avatar.

New Faces Joining the Cast for Season 2 and 3

Several new actors are joining the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender for the Earth Kingdom chapters. New cast members for Season 2 include:

  • Miya Cech as Toph Beifong
  • Chin Han as Long Feng
  • Justin Chien as King Kuei
  • Dichen Lachman as Avatar Yangchen
  • Terry Chen as Jeong Jeong

Netflix has also announced actors who will appear in the already-confirmed Season 3. These include Jon Jon Briones as Piandao and Tantoo Cardinal as Hama.

A Visibly Older Aang and Production Details

Actor Gordon Cormier was 12 years old when he filmed the first season. Now 16, his physical growth will be part of his character’s journey in Season 2.

“It’s definitely going to be a lot more action-packed and emotional,” Cormier said. “There are going to be some scenes that push the audience to tears, but also make them laugh”.

Netflix filmed Season 2 and Season 3 back-to-back. Production on Season 2 started in September 2024 and wrapped in May 2025, with Season 3 filming starting immediately after. This method helps keep the actors looking consistent between seasons and could mean a shorter wait for fans after Season 2 is released.

While a specific premiere date in 2026 is not yet set, Netflix released a first-look teaser and photos in December 2025. The teaser gives fans a glimpse of the older Gaang and their first mission in the Earth Kingdom, which involves trying to get the Earth King to help them fight the Fire Nation.
