The newest animated series from Critical Role, The Mighty Nein, introduces a world of complex heroes, and few are more complicated than Nott the Brave. This small, green-skinned goblin thief, voiced by Sam Riegel, is a bundle of nerves, a compulsive collector, and fiercely protective of her friends. For newcomers to the story, a simple question arises: just how old is this jumpy, secretive goblin? The answer reveals the tragic and magical heart of her character. Nott’s age is confusing because she is living two different lives. In her original halfling form as Veth Brenatto, she is approximately 25 years old. However, her physical body is that of a young adult goblin, which has only existed for a handful of years due to a terrible curse. This dual identity lies at the core of her journey in The Mighty Nein.

The Tragic Origin: From Veth Brenatto To Nott The Brave

To understand Nott’s age, you must first know her story. She was not born a goblin. She began life as Veth Brenatto, a halfling woman living a quiet, happy life in the town of Felderwin with her husband, Yeza, and their young son, Luc. This peaceful existence was destroyed when a local goblin clan raided their home and captured the family.

In a desperate act to save her husband and child, Veth created a distraction that allowed them to escape, but she was recaptured. As punishment, the goblins took her to a powerful spellcaster named Isharnai, who was instructed to “make her suffer”. The spellcaster cursed Veth, drowning her and transforming her into a goblin. She awoke in this new, terrifying form and took the name Nott the Braveโ€”an anagram of “Veth”. This transformation happened not long before she met the wizard Caleb Widogast and the events of the main story began.

The Official Age: Veth Brenatto Is 25

When discussing her true age, the most reliable information comes from the actor who plays her. Sam Riegel has stated that Veth Brenatto would be 25 years old during the events of The Mighty Nein. This refers to her chronological age from her birth as a halfling. Within the adventuring party, this makes her the third youngest member, older than Jester and Beauregard, but younger than Fjord and Caleb.

This age of 25 fits with her life story. She was married, had a son, and had built a family life before the curse altered everything. Her maturity, protective instincts, and the deep longing for her old life all align with a young adult in her mid-twenties who has experienced profound loss.

The Goblin Body: A Case Of “Six Or Nine”

The confusion about Nott’s age often stems from her own statements while in her goblin form. In the original live-play campaign, Nott once claimed to be “6 or 9 years old“. This is not a joke, but a reflection of goblin biology and culture. In the world of Dungeons & Dragons, goblins mature extremely quickly. They are considered adults around the age of 8 and rarely live past 40 or 50.

“She gave her age in one episode as ‘6 or 9 years old’โ€ฆ but also said Goblins have no real concept of age or years,” one fan analysis notes.
This means Nott’s goblin body is that of a young adult. The “6 or 9” comment is likely her rough, confused estimate of how long she has existed in this form, which aligns with the timeline of her curse happening only a few years prior. She is not a child; she is a fully mature goblin, which explains her capabilities, her romantic history, and her maternal feelings.

A Character Defined By Two Lives

Nott’s struggle is not about being young or old, but about being trapped in a body that does not match her soul. Her goblin form fills her with self-loathing and dysmorphia. She is terrified of water because of her drowning, and she hides her face behind a porcelain mask made from her son’s broken doll. Her entire motivation for adventuring with Caleb is her belief that he can become powerful enough to change her back into a halfling.

Her story in The Mighty Nein animated series explores these very human themes through a fantasy lens. As showrunner Tasha Huo explained:

“Nott is dealing with a serious issue of alcoholism. A lot of her story is about where does that come from?โ€ฆ It’s amazing that it’s a D&D high fantasy show, but everything is just really very human and relatable”.
The series, which premiered on November 19, 2025, on Amazon Prime Video, streamlines the epic 141-episode campaign but retains this core emotional journey. For those wanting to dive deeper into her past, her full origin story is also detailed in the graphic novel Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins โ€“ Nott the Brave.
