Here are the two possible outcomes.
BTS‘s Suga was caught operating an electric scooter under the influence of alcohol on August 6, 2024. This was later confirmed by a breathalyzer test showing a 0.08% alcohol level which resulted in his license being revoked and a fine. Alongside the company’s statement, Suga personally apologized for the incident on Weverse.
Despite the seriousness of the issue in South Korea, many international fans have been downplaying the situation. From an international perspective, riding an electric scooter, whether intoxicated or not, doesn’t seem to be seen as a significant concern.
It was later confirmed by the South Korean police handling the matter that the personal mobility device that Suga had been operating, was not just a kickboard with a lone panel, but it had a seat. According to the police’s statement, “it would be a more accurate description to call it an electronic scooter.”
For reference, kickboards with lone panels are often easily rented out on the street and look like this.
The police’s description puts Suga’s device closer to the below.
Possible Outcomes
Just how serious is Suga’s incident? According to South Korean law, there are two potential outcomes for Suga’s case:
- If categorized as an electric scooter with an internal engine: This would be treated similarly to a drunk driving incident involving a car. Suga would face not only a revoked license but also end up being charged and punished by law, in accordance with the traffic rule violations for cars.
- If categorized as an electric kickboard: The situation would result in a fine of ₩100,000 KRW (approximately $72.80 USD) and the revocation of his license.
Suga’s case is currently still under investigation by the police. Stay tuned for more updates!
