The Pogues are coming together for one last treasure hunt. Outer Banks Season 5 will be the final chapter of Netflixโ€™s popular teen drama, bringing the story of John B, Sarah, and their friends to a planned conclusion. Filming for the season has wrapped up, with the show expected to premiere on Netflix in 2026. Following the shocking events of the last season, the main cast is returning, but with one major absence and a few familiar faces getting bigger roles.

The Core Pogues Returning for Season 5

The heart of the show remains its core group of friends, who will all be back for the final adventure.

Chase Stokes returns as John B. Routledge, the groupโ€™s determined leader. The Season 4 finale left him and his wife, Sarah, facing a major life change as they prepare to become parents. Madelyn Cline is back as Sarah Cameron. Her characterโ€™s pregnancy is set to be a central part of the new season, moving their relationship into a new stage.

Madison Bailey reprises her role as Kiara โ€œKieโ€ Carrera. After the tragic death of her boyfriend, JJ, Kiara is expected to be deeply focused on getting revenge, which will drive much of the seasonโ€™s story. Jonathan Daviss returns as Pope Heyward, the groupโ€™s smart and cautious member, and Carlacia Grant is back as Cleo. The showโ€™s creators have said they plan to give Cleoโ€™s character more attention and development in this final season.

A Major Absence and Elevated Roles

The most significant change for Season 5 is the departure of Rudy Pankow as JJ Maybank. JJ was killed in the Season 4 finale by his biological father, Chandler Groff. This death sets the stage for the Poguesโ€™ final mission: revenge. While his character is gone, the showโ€™s creators have hinted that his spirit and the loose ends of his family story will remain important.

Two recurring characters have been promoted to series regulars for the final season, indicating they will have much larger parts to play.

  • Cullen Moss returns as Sheriff Shoupe. He has been a sometimes-helpful, sometimes-skeevy lawman since Season 1.
  • J. Anthony Crane is back as the villainous Chandler Groff, JJโ€™s biological father and the man who now possesses the valuable Blue Crown treasure. His actions make him the primary target for the Poguesโ€™ quest for vengeance.

Other Returning Faces and New Antagonists

The final season will also see the return of several other key characters who bring conflict and complexity to the story.

  • Drew Starkey as Rafe Cameron: Sarahโ€™s brother, whose path has increasingly crossed with the Pogues. He joined them in their vow for revenge at the end of Season 4.
  • Austin North as Topper Thornton: Sarahโ€™s ex-boyfriend, whose loyalties have always been complicated.
  • Fiona Palomo as Sofia: Rafeโ€™s ex-fiancรฉe, who is confirmed to return for the final season.

There is also potential for the return of other familiar characters like Wheezie Cameron (Julia Antonelli) and Popeโ€™s father, Heyward (E. Roger Mitchell), to help wrap up all the storylines. New characters are expected to appear as well. A mysterious figure named Anton Finch was teased in Season 4 and is described by creators as a โ€œformidable presenceโ€ who will be developed in Season 5.

The Final Seasonโ€™s Story and Setting

Outer Banks Season 5 will focus on the Poguesโ€™ pledge to avenge JJโ€™s death. This mission will likely take them to Portugal in pursuit of Chandler Groff and the stolen Blue Crown. Despite the international adventure, the creators have promised that the series will ultimately bring everything back home to the Outer Banks of North Carolina to provide a satisfying conclusion.

โ€œWeโ€™ve always known from the beginning what the last scene would be, if we would be lucky enough to get it that far,โ€ co-creator Josh Pate stated about having a clear plan for the finale.

The season finished filming in December 2025, after shooting in locations including Charleston, South Carolina, and Dubrovnik, Croatia. While an exact premiere date in 2026 is not yet set, fans can expect the same high-stakes mix of friendship, treasure hunting, and drama that has defined the series since it began.
