After more than ten years, filming for the final season of Outlander is complete. Caitriona Balfe, who has played Claire Fraser since 2014, recently shared intimate details about shooting her last scene for Outlander Season 8. She describes a long, emotional moment with co-star Sam Heughan that served as a fitting goodbye for both the actors and their beloved characters.
The Final Scene on the Outlander Set
In an interview, Caitriona Balfe explained that her final day of filming officially concluded with an extended scene between Claire and Jamie Fraser.
“That it was Sam and I, sharing a loving Claire and Jamie moment where they reflected on their lives together, was so fitting, and I was so grateful to be there with Sam, my steadfast partner throughout this whole series,” Balfe said.
The scene was a substantial one, lasting seven-and-a-half minutes. Balfe reflected on the unique pressure of the moment, noting that the dramatic goodbyes happening in the story mirrored the real-life farewells for the cast and crew. She described the experience as emotionally overwhelming in the best way.
A Cast and Crew Family Says Goodbye
Balfe was not the only one feeling emotional as production wrapped. The official end of filming was marked in late September, an event celebrated by the entire cast.
Balfe shared a post on Instagram featuring photos with a clapperboard. Her caption read, “Nothing is lost, Sassenach, only changed”โa well-known line from the series. She expressed immense gratitude to every cast and crew member and thanked the fans for their passionate support over the years.
Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser, shared his own farewell message. On his Instagram, he posted, “11 Years. 8 seasons. 101 Episodesโฆ What a journey,” thanking everyone involved and giving a special shout-out to his “brilliant partner in crime,” Caitriona Balfe.
The closeness of the cast was evident in their final days together. Sophie Skelton, who plays Brianna, described a peaceful end to filming. She mentioned that after Balfe wrapped her final scene, she came to support Skelton during hers, and the trioโBalfe, Skelton, and Heughanโshared a hug after Heughan filmed the very last shot.
