The sixth episode of Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2, titled “Nobody Gets the Fleece,” turned the classic myth of Polyphemus on its head. The new episode arrived on Disney+ and Hulu on Wednesday, January 7. In a major change from the book, it was Annabeth Chase who bravely reenacted the famous “Nobody” trick from Homer’s Odyssey to fight the Cyclops. The heroes walked into a dangerous trap, and a desperate choice by Percy Jackson led to Luke Castellan escaping with both the magical Golden Fleece and an injured Annabeth, changing the entire quest.
Polyphemus Sets a Deadly Trap for Grover and Clarisse
The episode made it clear that the Cyclops Polyphemus was much smarter and more dangerous than Percy and Annabeth expected. He did not kill Grover and Clarisse La Rue when he captured them. Instead, he used them as live bait, knowing their friends would come to rescue them and lead him straight to the real Golden Fleece.
Percy and Annabeth arrived on the island and disguised themselves in sheepskins to sneak into the monster’s cave. They found their friends, but Annabeth soon discovered that the Golden Fleece hanging on a tree outside was a fake, painted to look real. This was all part of Polyphemus’s plan. The real Fleece was hidden somewhere inside the cave, and the fake one was meant to lure demigods into his trap.
Annabeth Fights Polyphemus Using the “Nobody” Trick
When Polyphemus returned, Annabeth used her Yankees cap to become invisible and taunt the giant. In a clever and tense scene, she repeated the famous trick from the Odyssey. When the Cyclops roared and asked which god sent her, Annabeth defiantly replied, “Nobody”.
“With the Polyphemus fight, first of all, it was the best thing ever. It was so cool,” actress Leah Sava Jeffries (Annabeth) said about filming the sequence. She mentioned being nervous but excited to put her own spin on the iconic book moment.
This was a significant change from Rick Riordan’s original novel, The Sea of Monsters, where Percy fights the Cyclops using the “Nobody” name. Show star Walker Scobell (Percy) called this story change “brilliant”. The fight did not go as planned. Polyphemus, furious from the taunts, swatted the invisible Annabeth against a wall, leaving her badly hurt and unconscious.
Tyson Returns to Save His Brother Percy
Just as the situation seemed hopeless, Tyson returned. Everyone thought Percy’s Cyclops brother died in the ship explosion in Episode 4, but he was saved by a mysterious glowing presence in the ocean. He arrived at the critical moment to confront Polyphemus.
Tyson declared that Polyphemus was not his true brother, but Percy was. Their fight sent both Cyclopes tumbling off a cliff into the sea below. Tyson’s return and loyalty highlighted the episode’s themes of family and what makes a true sibling.
Percy’s Impossible Choice: The Fleece or Annabeth
With Annabeth unconscious and dying, and Percy, Grover, and Clarisse still trapped in the cave, their enemy, Luke Castellan, arrived on the island. Luke saw Annabeth’s condition and told Percy that only the healing power of the Golden Fleece could save her life.
This forced Percy into an agonizing decision. Grover had managed to find the real Golden Fleece hidden in the cave. Percy demanded that Clarisse hand it over to Luke so he could use it to heal Annabeth. Clarisse, focused on the mission to save Camp Half-Blood, refused.
“Percy crashes out. Fullyโฆ He takes the fleece from her and gives it to Luke himself, prioritizing Annabeth over the mission, Olympus and literally everything else,” noted one review of the episode.
Percy made his choice. He took the Fleece and gave it to Luke, trusting that Luke’s old care for Annabeth would make him save her. Luke used the Fleece’s magic on Annabeth, then took her with him as he escaped. Percy’s fatal flawโpersonal loyaltyโcost him the most important object of their quest.
The Fallout and a New Mission to Save Annabeth
Luke’s escape with the Fleece and Annabeth was a major defeat. Tyson returned and freed Percy, Grover, and Clarisse from the cave. With no ship, they had no way to chase Luke.
Tyson then revealed his new friends: four hippocampi, magical seahorses of Greek myth. One named Rainbow had helped save him from the ocean depths. These creatures now offer the group a way to travel across the sea. Their mission has completely changed. It is no longer just about the Golden Fleece. Now, they must rescue Annabeth from Luke and the forces of the Titan Kronos.
