The second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians has arrived, and its debut is making waves. The fantasy series returned with a two-episode premiere on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, on Disney+ and Hulu. The new season, which adapts the book The Sea of Monsters, has immediately earned a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on early critic reviews. This strong start follows a first season that won eight Children and Family Emmy Awards and was a top-five most-watched streaming show after its launch.

The first two episodes, “I Play Dodgeball with Cannibals” and “Demon Pigeons Attack,” are available now. New episodes will be released weekly every Wednesday. The season finale is scheduled for January 21, 2026.

What the New Season Is About
Season 2 picks up one year after the events of the first season. Percy Jackson is eager to return to the safety of Camp Half-Blood but finds things are not as he left them. His best friend, the satyr Grover Underwood, is missing and in danger. The camp’s protective borders have been broken, leaving it vulnerable to attacks from the forces of the Titan Kronos.
To save both his friend and the camp, Percy must venture into the dangerous Sea of Monsters (known to humans as the Bermuda Triangle) to find the legendary Golden Fleece. He is not alone on this quest. He is joined by fellow demigod Annabeth Chase, the fiercely competitive daughter of Ares Clarisse La Rue, and his newfound cyclops half-brother, Tyson.
This season expands the world beyond Percy’s point of view. Showrunner Dan Shotz explained that the TV format allows the story to follow other characters more closely.
“We get to be with Clarisse, we get to be with Luke — we get to expand the entire world. I think that’s going to be really exciting for audiences, because they will be able to invest more in all of these characters’ arcs,” said Shotz.
Critics and Fans Applaud the Return
The early response to the season has been very positive. Review website Rotten Tomatoes shows a 100% approval rating from critics so far. Variety noted the show “has returned for a powerful second season that stands just as tall as the first,” calling it “darker and just as compelling”.
Fans have also taken to social media to share their excitement. Many praised the show’s faithfulness to the original books and highlighted specific scenes like the thrilling chariot race. One viewer wrote, “Everything that made #PercyJackson s1 special is amplified tenfold in s2”. Another commented on the increased scale, noting, “S2 feels bigger in terms of production”.
A Bigger, More Cinematic Adventure
The cast and creators have emphasized that the second season is larger in scope and ambition. Lead actor Walker Scobell pointed out a major change in how the show was filmed.
“It’s much bigger than season one. Season one we filmed mainly on the volume stage… We ended up filming a lot on location this season,” Scobell said.
This shift allowed for more elaborate set pieces. A major sequence involving a chariot race at Camp Half-Blood required nearly two weeks of filming with practical effects, including real horses. Another highlight is an epic battle on a sunken warship called the Ironclad, which Scobell said was made “even bigger than the book somehow”.
Series author and co-creator Rick Riordan acknowledged the challenge of adapting each progressively more complex book.
“The production team is good-naturedly cursing me every season. They’re like, ‘You didn’t make it easy! Every book is more involved than the one before,’” Riordan joked. He added that the team successfully made everything “faster, more epic, and more cinematic”.
New and Returning Characters Join the Quest
The core trio of Walker Scobell (Percy), Leah Sava Jeffries (Annabeth), and Aryan Simhadri (Grover) returns. Season 2 also promotes two characters from recurring to main roles: Charlie Bushnell as the rebellious Luke Castellan and Dior Goodjohn as the formidable Clarisse La Rue.
A key new addition is Daniel Diemer as Tyson, Percy’s cyclops half-brother. Tyson is described as a kind and gentle giant who brings heart to the story. Diemer worked with special effects teams to create Tyson’s distinctive single eye.
The cast also includes Virginia Kull as Percy’s mother, Sally, and Glynn Turman as Chiron. Timothy Simons joins the season as the cursed spirit King Tantalus, who becomes the camp’s interim director. Actor Courtney B. Vance takes over the role of Zeus from the late Lance Reddick.
The series has already been renewed for a third season, which is currently in production and will adapt the third book, The Titan’s Curse.
