In the latest episode of Apple TV’s hit show, Carol Sturka crosses a major line in her fight against a global hive mind. After 40 days alone, she shares an intimate moment with Zosia, the emissary sent by “The Others.” This act has fans and critics asking one big question: is this real love, or a clever trick to make Carol give up her mission? The emotional event happens just as Carol’s only potential ally, Manousos, finally nears her location .
The Setup: Loneliness After a Long Isolation
The new episode, titled “Charm Offensive,” picks up right where the last one ended. Carol, played by Rhea Seehorn, has just been reunited with Zosia. She spent the previous 40 days in total isolation after pushing the hive-minded Others away . That experience left her deeply lonely and vulnerable. Show writers point out that Carol was “desperate for some kind of human connection” after the trauma of losing her wife and being abandoned .
Before the isolation, Carol had already shown she was attracted to Zosia, who looks like a character from her own romance novels . Zosia, played by Karolina Wydra, was chosen by the Others specifically for this resemblance, making her the perfect person to get close to Carol .
A Day of Unexpected Connection
In this episode, Carol tries a new approach. Instead of fighting the Others, she spends time with Zosia. They play games like croquet and cards, share a couples’ massage, and talk under the stars . For a while, it seems like a normal, pleasant day. Carol even visits the place where the Others all live togetherโa massive sports arena filled with people sleeping on mats .
The Others try their biggest gesture to please Carol: they completely rebuild her favorite diner, which had burned down years ago. They even track down and bring back the original waitress. At first, Carol is charmed by the memory. But she soon realizes the diner is just a perfect copy, a hollow replica of her past. This makes her see the gesture as a distraction .
“You are trying to distract me,” Carol tells Zosia that night, upset. “It’s manipulative bullshit because you know I haven’t given up” .
Right after this confrontation, in a moment of high emotion, Zosia kisses her. Carol kisses back, and they spend the night together .
The Big Question: Real Love or Clever Plan?
This kiss is the central mystery of the episode. Is Zosia acting on real feelings, or is she following the Others’ plan to pacify Carol? The show’s creator, Vince Gilligan, is leaving it for the audience to decide.
“I want the audience to decide: Is this true love, or is it artifice?” Gilligan said in a recent interview .
However, actress Karolina Wydra, who plays Zosia, defends her character’s motives. She says the Others operate from a place of genuine, unconditional love. In her view, Zosia kissed Carol because she believed it would make her happy, not to trick her.
“They’re coming from a place of love for Carol, wanting her to feel good, safe, and like she has someone to ease the loneliness,” Wydra explained .
She compared the Others’ actions to a parent giving a child medicine hidden in foodโthe intent is to help, even if the method seems deceptive .
Carol’s Dangerous Bargain
Despite the new romance, the episode shows Carol hasn’t lost her focus. The morning after, she immediately returns to her investigation. She updates a large whiteboard in her home with new facts, including a critical reminder: “They. Eat. People.” .
She also learns the Others are working on a giant antenna. Their goal is not just to stay on Earth but to broadcast the “joining” virus to other life forms in space . This proves their mission is expanding, raising the stakes for Carol’s resistance.
Carol also makes Zosia change how she speaks. She tells her to stop using “we” and start using “I,” pushing her to act more like an individual . This might be a strategy to create a division within the hive mind, or it could be Carol tricking herself into seeing a real person where there isn’t one.
Another Survivor Nears the Finale
While Carol’s story unfolds in New Mexico, the episode checks in on the other main survivor, Manousos. After being saved by the Others against his will in the previous episode, he is now traveling north. He is determined to meet Carol, and the show hints he is finally approaching the U.S. border .
His arrival could change everything. He represents a purely human ally for Carol, someone who has refused all help from the Others. Their meeting, set for the season finale, will force Carol to choose between her new connection with Zosia and a partnership based on shared defiance.
