Peacock has released a new trailer for its upcoming original series Ponies, starring Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson. The eight-episode spy thriller is set to start streaming exclusively on January 15. The show places two underestimated embassy secretaries at the center of a dangerous Cold War conspiracy.
The series is created by David Iserson (New Girl, Mr. Robot) and Susanna Fogel (The Flight Attendant), who also directs. Clarke and Richardson play “PONIES”โan intelligence term meaning “Persons Of No Interest”โwho are thrust into the world of espionage after a personal tragedy.
What Is The New Ponies Series About?
Set in Moscow in 1977, the story follows Bea (Emilia Clarke) and Twila (Haley Lu Richardson), who work as secretaries at the American Embassy. Their lives change when their husbands are killed under mysterious circumstances in the USSR. The official description states the two then become CIA operatives, using their perceived invisibility to their advantage.
Bea is described as an over-educated woman who speaks Russian and is the child of Soviet immigrants. Her partner, Twila, is a fearless and abrasive small-town girl. Together, they must navigate the treacherous world of spies to uncover a vast conspiracy and find out the truth behind their husbands’ deaths.
The new trailer shows the duo discussing their husbands’ secret work. After learning the men died in a plane crash, the grieving women agree to work for the government. A key moment in the trailer features Twila pointing out their unique position: “We’re women, people only look at us if they want to have sex with us or marry us, and that’s it. No one would ever suspect us of anything”.
Inside The Action-Packed First Trailer
The released footage offers a first look at the show’s mix of drama, intrigue, and action. The trailer begins with Clarke and Richardson’s characters walking together, setting the tone for their partnership. It quickly moves into an action montage, showing the women engaging in dangerous spy craft.
Key scenes from the trailer include:
- Bea and Twila setting a bar on fire as part of a mission.
- The pair attending glamorous, high-society parties to gather intelligence.
- Tense moments where they get dangerously close to enemy agents.
The footage suggests that while their new roles give them power and purpose, they also come with a severe cost. The visual style embraces a 1970s aesthetic, fitting the Cold War setting.
