Prime Video’s live-action adaptation of the hit PlayStation game God of War has cast its ruler of Asgard. Emmy-winning actor Mandy Patinkin will play Odin, joining a growing cast for the highly-anticipated series. The announcement came alongside the news that Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will play Thor, cementing the family at the heart of the Norse saga.

The series, which has already received a two-season order, is moving forward in pre-production in Vancouver. It is being adapted for television by experienced showrunner Ronald D. Moore.

The Casting of a Legend as the All-Father

Mandy Patinkin is a celebrated actor with a career spanning nearly 50 years across film, television, and stage. He is widely known for his iconic role as Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride and his Emmy-winning performance as CIA officer Saul Berenson on the hit drama Homeland. He also had a notable role on Criminal Minds as Jason Gideon. His other major television work includes the medical drama Chicago Hope, for which he won an Emmy, and more recent series like Death and Other Details and Brilliant Minds.

His film credits include Yentl, Dick Tracy, and Wonder, and he won a Tony Award for his role in the Broadway musical Evita. This deep and varied experience makes him a major addition to the God of War project.

The official character description for his role paints a complex picture: “Odin, the All-Father, is not physically imposing or particularly god-like: but looks can be deceiving”. The description continues, labeling him as “the most powerful Aesir god, a patriarch who leads with an iron fist, and an unrivaled seeker of knowledge”. He is described as paranoid, manipulative, and dangerous in his quest to prevent Ragnarök, the Norse end of days. He will serve as a “formidable antagonist” to the series’ lead, Kratos.

A Complete Look at the God of War Series Cast and Crew

The series is quickly assembling its ensemble of gods and heroes. Ryan Hurst, known for his roles in Sons of Anarchy and Remember the Titans, was previously announced to play the lead role of Kratos. Interestingly, Hurst previously provided the voice and motion capture for Thor in the God of War Ragnarök video game before being cast as Kratos for the live-action show.

Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, an Icelandic actor recognized for his role in the Apple TV+ series Severance, will take on the role of Thor. The character is described as a mountain of a man haunted by his past actions. “A former soldier of Asgard and Odin’s former right-hand man,” Thor is said to be struggling with confidence and turning to alcohol to cope.

Other confirmed cast members include:

  • Max Parker as Heimdall, the Watchman of Asgard and one of Odin’s sons.
  • Teresa Palmer as Phoebe/Sif, the goddess of family and Thor’s wife.

Notably, the roles of Atreus (Kratos’s son), Freya, and Mimir have not yet been cast.

The creative team behind the camera is equally strong. The series is being written and executive produced by Ronald D. Moore, the acclaimed showrunner behind Outlander, Battlestar Galactica, and For All Mankind. He will serve as the showrunner. Directing the first two episodes is Frederick E.O. Toye, an Emmy-winning director known for his work on Shōgun, The Boys, and the recent video game adaptation Fallout.

The show is a co-production between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with PlayStation Productions and Moore’s Tall Ship Productions.

The Story and Future of the God of War Adaptation

The series will adapt the narrative of the 2018 God of War game, which rebooted the franchise by moving its setting from Greek to Norse mythology. The official story description states: “God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye”. The story explores their strained relationship as “Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human”.

Although based on the 2018 game, the casting reveals that the series will also include characters who had larger roles in the 2022 sequel, God of War Ragnarök, such as Odin, Thor, and Sif.

The project is currently in pre-production in Vancouver, with production expected to begin in February 2026. Amazon has shown significant confidence in the series by granting it a two-season order upfront, before a single episode has been filmed. A premiere date for the first season has not yet been announced.
