The live-action adaptation of the hit PlayStation video game is moving fast. Just a day after announcing Ryan Hurst as the lead character Kratos, Amazon’s Prime Video has added another key actor to its cast. Teresa Palmer has been cast as the goddess Sif, an important figure from Norse mythology in the God of War story.

This casting news is the latest major step for the series, which has a two-season order from the streaming service. Production is gearing up in Vancouver, and more casting announcements are expected soon.

A Quick Look at the New Goddess Sif

In the world of God of War, Sif is known as the wife of Thor and the goddess connected to family and the harvest. While her role in the 2022 video game God of War Ragnarok is not the largest, her presence is significant. She is a protective mother to her childrenโ€”Magni, Modi, and Thrudโ€”and holds a deep resentment toward Kratos and his son, Atreus, for past conflicts.

The decision to cast Sif so early suggests the series plans to include major storylines and characters from the Ragnarok game. This has led fans to speculate about which other gods and characters might appear. The role will see Palmer playing a powerful, complex character driven by love for her family and a fierce protective streak.

Teresa Palmer’s Journey to the God of War Cast

Teresa Palmer, an Australian actress, brings a mix of film and television experience to the role. She is widely recognized for her lead part in the 2013 zombie romance movie Warm Bodies. Moviegoers might also have seen her in recent action films like The Fall Guy alongside Ryan Gosling.

On television, Palmer is known for playing the witch Diana Bishop in the supernatural series A Discovery of Witches. She recently finished work on an Australian series called The Family Next Door and the action movie Subversion, which stars Chris Hemsworth.

Ryan Hurst Leads as Kratos After Playing Thor

The casting of Palmer follows the major announcement that Ryan Hurst will portray the protagonist, Kratos. This is an interesting full-circle moment for Hurst, as he previously provided the voice and motion-capture performance for Thor in the God of War Ragnarok video game. Now, he steps into the role of Thor’s main enemy.

Hurst is best known for his emotional performance as Opie Winston on the hit FX series Sons of Anarchy. He also played the silent, intimidating villain Beta on The Walking Dead. His upcoming projects include a role in director Christopher Nolan’s film The Odyssey.

“Kratos is Spartan by birth, and a god by nature. Raised in a martial culture, he rose to command armies in service of his homeland until one day he made a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War and lost his soul in exchange for being victorious in battle,” states the official character description.

The Creative Team Behind the Scenes

The series is under the guidance of an experienced creative team. Ronald D. Moore, the creator of shows like Outlander and For All Mankind, is the writer, showrunner, and executive producer. He took over the project in late 2024 after the original creative team departed.

Directing the first two episodes will be Frederick E.O. Toye, whose directing credits include episodes of major series like Shลgun and The Boys. The series is a co-production between Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions, and Moore’s own Tall Ship Productions.

The Storyline and What Fans Can Expect

The show’s story will follow the narrative path set by the 2018 God of War game and its 2022 sequel, Ragnarok. The official description focuses on the central relationship:

“Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”

This confirms the series will explore the emotional core of Kratos’s journey as a parent, a theme that resonated deeply with players of the games. The search for the young actor to play Atreus is still underway.

What This Casting Means for the Series

The back-to-back announcements of Hurst and Palmer show that production is actively moving forward. While an official release date has not been set, some reports suggest a potential 2027 premiere. The series was originally announced by Amazon in 2022.

With Sif now cast, attention turns to other pivotal characters from the games who have yet to be announced. This includes the goddess Freya, the wise Mimir, the dwarf brothers Brok and Sindri, and the All-Father himself, Odin. The casting of Thor and Baldur has also been the subject of recent rumors.
