The story was later updated by Wadlow, and the setting was moved from Mexico to Thailand.
The movie follows five friends—Sara (played by Kathryn Newton), Max (played by Lana Condor), Greg (played by Gavin Casalegno), James (played by Nico Hiraga), and Adrienne (played by Tommi Rose)—on a trip to Thailand. They are looking for one last adventure before starting their adult lives. Their guide, played by Tayme Thapthimthong, takes them to explore the Devil’s Mouth cave system. A Vacation Turns Into a Fight for Survival
The trailer starts with scenes of the friends enjoying their time in Thailand, sailing on a yacht and having fun. But things change quickly when they enter the caves. At first, the group is amazed by the beauty of the underwater caverns. However, Kathryn Newton’s character, Sara, starts noticing dead animals floating in the water and spots blood deeper down. The guide then finds a shark tooth in a pair of cracked goggles, making everyone realize the danger they are in.
The group faces a terrifying situation when a bull shark attacks one of them. Lana Condor’s character, Max, is shocked and asks, “How is there a shark in a freshwater cave system?” This question highlights the unusual and scary nature of their situation. Bull sharks are known for being able to live in both saltwater and freshwater, making them even more dangerous in this setting.
The official trailer description adds more detail, saying the caves were recently flooded by a storm. The flood brought sea life into the freshwater system, and most of it died, but one predator survived—the shark. The synopsis explains, “The creatures died in the fresh water, but something survived… and it’s hunting them now— fast, silent, and deadly.”

Kathryn Newton spoke about her character’s journey in the movie. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, she explained, “My character, Sara, is going through something relatable with her best friend Max played by Lana Condor. Sara wants to carve her own path and assert independence but doesn’t want to lose her best friend in the process. That’s a tricky thing to communicate, and then you add a bull shark and your true colors come out.”
Newton said the script was exciting from start to finish and that she couldn’t wait to work on such a complex story made more intense by the life-and-death stakes.
Director Jeff Wadlow also talked about what makes the movie interesting beyond the shark attacks. He said, “The shark and the cave create the nightmare, but the most interesting part for me was watching how these relationships evolved under that kind of unimaginable pressure.” He added that the friendships already had many layers in the script, and having actors like Newton and Condor made the story even more compelling.
During Prime Video’s Obsessed Fest fan event, Gavin Casalegno shared that making a shark movie was on his bucket list. He and his co-star Tommi Rose hinted that viewers won’t want any of the characters to die, making the stakes feel higher.
