Actor Jung Joon Won recently opened up about the harsh online comments regarding his appearance in the hit K-drama “Resident Playbook.” Despite his character Gu Do Won being well-received, some netizens criticized the “visual disparity” between him and his co-star Go Youn Jung, who played Oh Yi Young.
In a candid interview, Jung Joon Won shared his initial concerns about the romantic storyline. He admitted he was aware of the potential backlash but focused on delivering a convincing performance. His honest response has since sparked discussions about unrealistic beauty standards in K-dramas.
Jung Joon Wonโs Response to Visual Criticism
Before joining “Resident Playbook,” Jung Joon Won was unaware that his character would have a love line with Go Youn Jungโs character. When he found out, he questioned whether viewers would believe their pairing.
“When I found out about the love line, I was happy but also very worried. Iโm pretty self-aware, so I wondered, โWould viewers really buy that Yi Young likes Do Won?โ I even asked the director early on, โDo you think this is okay?โ and he gave me a lot of encouragement. He told me to act with confidence.”
As filming progressed, he realized that Gu Do Won was an idealized character. Instead of letting criticism affect him, he focused on making the relationship believable through his acting.
“As I got deeper into the role, I realized Do Won was a bit of a fantasy character. I started to think, โDo people like this even exist?โ But if I could portray him well, I believed I could make the audience buy into it. I honestly expected the visual disparity comments before we even started. It didnโt hurt my feelings because I knew they were coming.”
