The creator of the hit animated series says the new season will explore original material and “interesting tangents” not seen in the source comics, promising bigger threats and a darker path for its hero.
Robert Kirkman, the creator of Invincible, has shared new details about the upcoming fourth season of the Prime Video series. He confirms that while the show will continue to follow the major story beats of his comics, it will also introduce brand-new elements and original storylines. Kirkman described these additions as “interesting tangents,” suggesting fresh content even for fans familiar with the graphic novels. The new season is scheduled to premiere in March 2026.
Robert Kirkman Discusses the New Direction for Season 4
In recent interviews, Kirkman explained his approach to adapting his own work for the new season. He stated that the show maintains a close connection to the comic books but that he enjoys weaving in new ideas.
โThis show will always follow the comics closely. Thatโs something that’s very important to me,โ Kirkman said. โAll that said, I can get complacent and doing shiny new things is always my preference, so this season more than any other thus far, goes off in someโฆ I’ll sayโฆ interesting tangents.โ
He emphasized that the core story will remain recognizable to comic readers, but the journey to key moments will include surprises. The goal is to add “new elements of discovery” to how famous events from the page are portrayed on screen. Kirkman also noted that one completely original episode, which he wrote himself, will feature a significant sidestep from the typical Invincible story.
Major New Villains and an Unused Comic Storyline
Season 4 will introduce several formidable new antagonists. The most prominent is Thragg, the Grand Regent of the Viltrumite Empire, voiced by Lee Pace. Thragg is positioned as an even greater threat than Omni-Man. Another new villain is Dinosaurus, a character Mark Grayson battles in released first-look images.
Perhaps the most talked-about new element is the potential adaptation of a storyline Kirkman never completed in the comics. He has mentioned a classic superhero trope he always wanted to explore.
โEvery superhero story has some chapter where they go to hell and they fight the devil. It happens in DC and Marvel comicsโฆ I never got around to doing anything like that in Invincible,โ Kirkman explained. โSo itโs entirely possible that we may be doing something like that in the show.โ
This plotline seems connected to the post-credits scene from Season 3 featuring the demon detective Damien Darkblood. Kirkman has confirmed that Bruce Campbell will play a major role in this original episode.
How Season 4 Changes Mark Grayson’s Story
The emotional core of Season 4 will focus on a changed Mark Grayson. The finale of Season 3 saw Mark decide to abandon his rule against killing after his brutal fights with Angstrom Levy and Conquest. Kirkman teases that this decision will define his journey in the new season.
โHe’s going to be taking a different path starting in Season 4, and that is going to take him down a dark road. There’s going to be some huge ramifications of that.โ
Kirkman described the new season as “brutal,” but highlighted that the intensity would be more emotional than in previous years. He said the season represents a payoff for events set in motion from the very first episode.
