Ryan Reynolds recently shared that he pitched an R-rated Star Wars project to Disney. The actor, known for his work in Deadpool, wants to explore a darker side of the galaxy far, far awayโbut he doesnโt see himself acting in it.
Reynolds made the revelation on The Box Office Podcast. He explained that his idea was not about adding vulgar content but focusing on deeper emotions. Disney has never made an R-rated Star Wars movie before, but Reynolds believes the franchise could benefit from taking creative risks.
“I pitched to Disney, I said, โWhy donโt we do an R-rated Star Wars property? It doesnโt have to be overt, A+ characters. Thereโs a wide range of characters you could use.โ And I donโt mean R-rated to be vulgar. R-rated as a Trojan horse for emotion. I always wonder why studios donโt want to just gamble on something like that.”
The actor clarified that he would prefer working behind the scenes as a writer or producer. He admitted that starring in the film would be a “bad fit.” His vision aligns with mature Star Wars stories like Andor, which explored darker themes without needing an R-rating.
Disney has kept Star Wars mostly family-friendly. The closest the franchise came to an adult tone was Andor, which dealt with rebellion and sacrifice. An R-rated Star Wars movie would be a big shift, but Reynolds thinks it could work if done right.
Fans have mixed reactions. Some believe Star Wars should stay PG-13, while others want more mature stories. Reynoldsโ pitch remains just an idea for now. Disney has not confirmed if they will move forward with it.
The next Star Wars movie is The Mandalorian & Grogu, set for release in 2026. Another film, Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, is also in development.
Reynolds continues working on Deadpool projects, including a possible X-Men crossover. His Star Wars pitch shows his interest in expanding big franchises in new ways. Whether Disney takes the gamble remains to be seen.
