Pop star Sabrina Carpenter is expanding her creative talents, taking on a starring and producing role in an upcoming Alice in Wonderland musical film for Universal Pictures. The project, described as a passion project for the singer, has generated lively reactions from fans online, with many praising her career moves.

The untitled film will be written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, known for her work on Hustlers and HBO’s Succession. Producer Marc Platt, behind the Wicked and La La Land film adaptations, is also attached to the project.

Fan Reactions to the Big News

News of the musical film broke online, and fans were quick to share their thoughts. Many expressed excitement about Carpenter’s rapid success across different entertainment fields.

One social media user commented on the singer’s busy schedule, writing, โ€œAinโ€™t no way Sabrina waking up and speed-running every industry like it’s side quests ๐Ÿ˜ญ one minute she is charting, next minute she is Alice in Wonderland.โ€

Others pointed out the perfect match between the star and the story. A fan noted, โ€œCasting Sabrina Carpenter in a world of illusions is poetic. she has been playing with perception her whole career.โ€ Another added, โ€œyall donโ€™t know this girl loves alice in wonderland !!!! ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ im so happy for her rn.โ€

A Passion Project Years in the Making

This new film is not Carpenter’s first attempt to bring Alice in Wonderland to the screen. She was previously attached to a different Alice musical at Netflix, a deal announced in 2020 that never moved forward.

Reports indicate this new version at Universal is a direct result of Carpenter’s own initiative. She is said to have approached the studio about a year ago with specific ideas and a lookbook, making a personal pitch for the project that later attracted the involvement of Scafaria and the producing team.

The film is a significant step for Carpenter, marking her first major studio film as a lead and producer. While her specific role has not been officially confirmed, sources describe it as a deeply personal endeavor for the global pop star.

The Creative Team Behind the Film

The project has assembled a notable team of Hollywood veterans. Director and writer Lorene Scafaria received critical acclaim for the 2019 film Hustlers, which earned her a Best Director nomination from the Independent Spirit Awards.

Producer Marc Platt brings extensive experience with major musicals to the project, having produced both the Broadway and film versions of Wicked. He also produced the Oscar-winning film La La Land.

They are joined by producers Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton of Alloy Entertainment, the company behind popular television series like Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars.

Sabrina Carpenter’s Dual Career

Carpenter is no stranger to acting, having begun her career as a child actor on the Disney Channel series Girl Meets World. She has since appeared in films like The Hate U Give, Work It, and the Tall Girl series on Netflix.

Her focus shifted to music in recent years, resulting in massive commercial success. Her 2024 album Short n’ Sweet and her 2025 album Man’s Best Friend have catapulted her to the top of the charts. She recently earned six Grammy Award nominations, including for Album of the Year and Song of the Year.

The Alice in Wonderland musical will be Carpenter’s first feature film credit since her recent Grammy acclaim and global music success.

Universal’s senior vice president of production development, Ryan Jones, and director of production development, Jacqueline Garell, are overseeing the project for the studio.
