Netflix has released the first trailer for its new four-part documentary series, Sean Combs: The Reckoning. The series, which begins streaming today, December 2, promises a detailed look at the rise and fall of the music mogul, featuring private footage filmed just days before his arrest.
The project is executive produced by rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and directed by Alexandria Stapleton. It arrives while Sean Combs, also known as Diddy and Puff Daddy, is serving a prison sentence. In July, he was found guilty on two counts of transportation for purposes of prostitution. He was not found guilty on more serious charges of racketeering and sex trafficking. Combs is appealing the conviction.
What The New Trailer Reveals
The minute-long trailer opens with a scene many have not seen before. It shows Sean Combs in a hotel room on September 10, 2024, which was six days before his arrest by federal agents. In the clip, he is on a tense phone call. He tells the person on the other end that they need to “find somebody that’ll work with us that has dealt in the dirtiest of dirty business”.
He then states, “We’re losing”. This private moment was reportedly filmed for a different documentary project that Combs was working on himself before his legal troubles escalated. The footage was later obtained by the team behind The Reckoning.
A spokesperson for Sean Combs, Juda Engelmayer, has said the legal team is “deeply concerned” about Netflix using this footage. Engelmayer stated the material includes “private moments, pre-indictment material from an unfinished project, and conversations involving legal strategy”. He emphasized that the material was not provided by Combs or his team and questioned how it was obtained.
Voices From Inside The Documentary
Director Alexandria Stapleton spoke about the goal of the series in an interview. She explained that the documentary is meant to be a look at how the public views famous people.
โThis isn’t just about the story of Sean Combs or the story of Cassie, or the story of any of the victims, or the allegations against him, or the trial. Ultimately, this story is a mirror [reflecting us] as the public, and what we are saying when we put our celebrities on such a high pedestal. I hope [this documentary] is a wake-up call for how we idolize people,โ Stapleton said.
Stapleton also mentioned that when R&B singer Cassie (Cassandra Ventura) filed her lawsuit against Combs in November 2023, it made her think about how society handles such serious accusations.
Executive producer 50 Cent, who has had a well-known rivalry with Combs for years, also commented on their relationship. He described an early encounter where Combs offered to take him shopping.
โWhat they consider a pre-existing beef, right, for 20 years is me being uncomfortable with him suggesting that he takes me shopping or I looked at it like it was like a tester. Maybe you’ll come play with me, type of thing, right? And it’s not personal,โ Jackson said.
He also talked about a revealing scene in the documentary. After greeting fans in Harlem, Combs is seen getting into his car and immediately asking for hand sanitizer, saying he needs a bath. 50 Cent believes this moment shows his true character.
โThat shows you his character. That’s one of the moments where he forgot he was on tape,โ Jackson noted.
Who Tells The Story In The Series
The documentary includes interviews with a wide range of people connected to Combs’s life and career. This includes former business partners, artists who worked with him, and even members of the jury from his federal trial.
Some of the featured interviews include:
- Aubrey O’Day, a former member of the Bad Boy group Danity Kane.
- Kirk Burrowes, the co-founder of Bad Boy Entertainment.
- Joi Dickerson-Neal, an alleged victim and former acquaintance of Combs.
- Two jurors from the United States v. Combs trial.
The series will also feature other voices from his past, including former artists, contestants from his MTV show Making the Band, and former law enforcement officials.
