Story and Characters So Far
Sentenced to Be a Hero adapts the light novel series by Rocket Shokai with illustrations by Mephisto. The story takes place in a world where heroism is a punishment for serious criminals. Those sentenced become immortal fighters forced to battle the demon king’s army. Each time they die in combat, they are resurrected and sent back to the front lines, losing parts of their humanity with each death .
The protagonist Xylo Forbartz (voiced by Yลhei Azakami in Japanese and David Matranga in English) was a Holy Knight commander who killed his goddess after she became corrupted by demonic blight. He now leads Penal Hero Unit 9004, a group of dysfunctional criminals . During a mission, he meets Teoritta (Mayu Iizuka and Emi Lo), the 13th goddess of swords, who forms a contract with him despite his reluctance .
Other members of Unit 9004 include Dotta Luzulas, a kleptomaniac with exceptional eyesight; Venetim Leopool, a former con man who handles support; and Tatsuya, the oldest hero who has lost most of his memories after dying many times.
