Fans of the hit Apple TV+ series Severance finally have the update they have been waiting for. Executive producer Ben Stiller has confirmed that a third season is actively in development. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Stiller gave a clear, though not specific, timeline for the show’s return.

โ€œItโ€™s coming. There will be another season. It will be soon-ish,โ€ Stiller told the audience.

He acknowledged the long waits fans have endured, joking that the show has produced only 19 episodes over five and a half years, while a show like Young Sheldon has filmed hundreds in the same period. The significant gap between the first two seasons was largely due to industry-wide delays caused by the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Stiller Steps Back from Directing Role

In a major shift behind the camera, Ben Stiller confirmed he will not be directing any episodes of the upcoming third season. Stiller has been a key creative force, having directed 11 of the show’s 19 episodes across the first two seasons, including the premieres and finales.

He is stepping away from the director’s chair to focus on other projects, which include a World War II film, the next installment in the Meet the Parents series, and a project for HBO titled The Band. Stiller reassured fans he remains deeply involved as an executive producer, having spent the last eight months working on the new season.

Cast Reaction to the Director Change

The news of Stiller’s departure from the director’s role was met with a joking protest from a key cast member. Patricia Arquette, who plays the stern Harmony Cobel, shared her thoughts in an interview with ScreenRant.

โ€œWell, I am not thrilled with that, I’m going to say. I’m not happy about itโ€ฆ I don’t appreciate this. I’m not down. Booooo Stiller! I’m going to get him back for Season 3,โ€ Arquette said.

Despite the change in his role, Stiller expressed strong confidence in the new team, suggesting that the upcoming season could be the show’s best yet thanks to the new directors joining the project.

What to Expect in the New Season

While specific plot details for Season 3 are under wraps, the story is expected to pick up directly after the intense cliffhanger of the Season 2 finale. The finale saw Adam Scott’s character, Mark Scout, make a pivotal choice by running off with his coworker Helly, played by Britt Lower, while deliberately locking out his outie’s wife, Gemma.

This decision sets the stage for a new dynamic, moving the characters toward a potential rebellion against their employer, the mysterious Lumon Industries. Series creator Dan Erickson has hinted that the show will explore what happens when the divided employees begin to connect and unite against the company that controls them.

Production Timeline and Release Window

To avoid another lengthy break, the show’s creative team began planning for the third season early. A writers’ room was assembled and began work before the second season had even finished airing. A significant addition to the writing team is Beau Willimon, the creator of House of Cards and a writer on Andor, who was brought on to help shape the story.

According to reports, filming for the new season is expected to begin in the spring of 2026. Based on this production schedule, a realistic release window for Severance Season 3 on Apple TV+ is likely to be in mid-to-late 2027.
