Understanding the Mid-Season Hiatus
The nearly 10-week break is a standard programming strategy for major broadcast networks like CBS. This hiatus encompasses the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s holidays, a period when regular viewership often dips due to travel and family events. CBS uses this time to schedule specials, award shows, and other programming.
During this break, CBS will fill the Sheriff Country time slot with reruns. On Friday, December 26, a repeat of Fire Country will air. The following week, on Friday, January 2, 2026, CBS will rebroadcast Sheriff Country‘s fourth episode, “Out of Office”.
What to Expect in “Crucible, Part 2”
Episode 10, “Crucible, Part 2,” is the direct conclusion to the fall finale’s major cliffhanger. The story picks up immediately after the events of Episode 9, “Crucible, Part 1,” which ended with a violent siege on the sheriff’s station by the powerful Barlow family.
The most pressing question is the fate of Travis Fraley (Christopher Gorham), Mickey’s ex-husband, who was shot just as he confessed he was still in love with her. Showrunner Matt Lopez confirmed that Travis’s life “hangs in the balance” and that the situation will test Sheriff Mickey Fox (Morena Baccarin) like never before.
“It puts all of her skills to this ultimate test,” Lopez told TV Insider. “It might be Morenaโs finest hour on the showโฆ sheโs dealing with 10 different balls in the air. A person has been shotโฆ itโs her ex-husband and the father of her childโฆ At the same time, she has this incredibly fraught and dangerous situation to manage in her role as the sheriff.”
The episode will continue to focus on the core cast, including Deputy Nathan Boone (Matt Lauria) and Mickey’s father, Wes Fox (W. Earl Brown). The crisis is expected to force the characters, who have experienced tensions throughout the season, to work together and potentially emerge stronger.

More Episodes and a Crossover Event
The return of Sheriff Country also marks the beginning of the show’s uninterrupted run toward its season finale. The series has already been renewed for a second season, and the back half of the first season will continue to develop character relationships.
A major two-part crossover event with its sister show, Fire Country, is also on the horizon. Showrunner Matt Lopez described this event as being “on another order of magnitude,” telling one continuous story across two hours of television with multiple character pairings. This follows smaller crossover moments that have already occurred between the two series, which share a connected universe.
