The latest episode of Shrinking took a dark turn right at the end. Episode 7, titled “I Will Be Grape,” balanced a day of remembrance for Tia with growing tensions at home for Liz and a devastating loss for Gaby. The hour delivered joy, awkward moments, and then a gut punch that will change everything going forward .
Episode 8 is set to release on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, on Apple TV+ .
Alice’s Early Move Forces Jimmy to Face the Empty Nest
The episode centers on what would have been Tia’s birthday. Jimmy (Jason Segel) and Alice (Lukita Maxwell) decide to celebrate her life rather than just mourn. But the plan gets complicated fast.
Alice reveals that Wesleyan University needs her to report early for soccer preseason training. She will leave much sooner than expected. The news hits Jimmy hard. He has been dreading the silence of an empty house, and this accelerates the timeline .
Sean (Luke Tennie) also hints that he will move out of the pool house soon for Marisol. Summer even offers to move in with Jimmy, but everyone quickly shuts down that bizarre idea .
A Graveside Gathering Brings Louis Back
The group visits Tia’s grave wearing the tacky shirts she once bought them. Louis (Brett Goldstein) shows up with flowers. Alice had invited him without telling anyone. Brian (Michael Urie) jokes about how good Louis looks now .
Louis shares that life is going well. He has a new girlfriend and a promotion at work. Alice later admits to Jimmy that she wanted him to see how Louis turned his life around. She hoped it would inspire Jimmy to finally move forward and find someone too .
Jimmy realizes his daughter just gave him a taste of his own unorthodox therapy. He calls it “Jimmying.” He takes the hint and starts to open up to the idea of dating again .
Liz and Her Mother-in-Law Finally Face Off
Liz (Christa Miller) struggles badly with the arrival of her mother-in-law, Constance (Candice Bergen). Constance came to help Derek (Ted McGinley) recover from his recent bypass surgery. The two women trade passive-aggressive comments, and Liz feels constantly judged .
The tension boils over when Constance gives Matthew solid career advice about selling sneakers. Liz feels undermined as a parent. They argue, and Derek overhears. Stressed by the conflict, he leaves the house against doctor’s orders .
Paul (Harrison Ford) tracks Derek down at a park. Left behind on a bench, Liz and Constance finally talk honestly. Constance admits she was too detached as a mother and sees Liz did a great job. Liz acknowledges Constance’s wisdom with Matthew. They agree to stop the fighting for Derek’s sake .
Paul Offers His Practice and Finds a Kindred Spirit
Paul’s Parkinson’s symptoms are getting worse. His hands tremble constantly. He decides it is time to hand over his clinic to Gaby (Jessica Williams). He wants her to run it in his traditional style. But Gaby turns him down. She reveals plans to open her own trauma center instead. Paul feels a little sad but supports her .
Later at Liz’s house, Paul connects instantly with Constance. They both feel misunderstood by the younger generation. They bond over trying to share hard-won wisdom, only to be seen as intrusive. It looks like the start of a new friendship .
The Final Scene Shatters Gaby
The episode ends with joy and music. Everyone gathers at Jimmy’s house to sing “A Thousand Years” around the piano. Tia used to mishear the lyric as “I will be grape,” which gave the episode its title. Sofi (Cobie Smulders) shows up mid-song, adding to the beautiful awkwardness. Jimmy welcomes her in .
Then the tone shifts completely. Gaby steps outside and takes a phone call. Her face drops. The news comes that her patient Maya has died. The screen cuts to black, leaving viewers with the weight of that devastating moment.
