Netflix just dropped its newest horror series, and the title did not lie. Something very bad indeed happens in the final episode of Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen. The show, which came out on March 26, 2026, follows a couple named Rachel Harkin (Camila Morrone) and Nicky Cunningham (Adam DiMarco) as they get ready for their wedding at a remote family cabin. But a dark family curse turns what should be a happy day into a blood-soaked nightmare.
The eight-episode series comes from creator Haley Z. Boston, who previously wrote for Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of Stranger Things, also serve as executive producers. The show has quickly become a talking point for horror fans, with many discussing the shocking final moments where multiple characters bleed to death at the altar.
The Wedding Curse That Started It All
The curse at the center of the show began many generations ago. A bride made a deal with Death itself to bring back her dead groom. Death agreed, but with one rule: he had to be her true soulmate. The couple lived, but Death cursed all their children. Every person in that bloodline must marry their real soulmate by sunset on their wedding day. If they marry the wrong person, they bleed out and die.
Rachel learns about this curse from a creepy old man she meets before the wedding. This man, called the Witness, was once engaged to Rachel’s great-great-great-great-great-grandmother. He left her at the altar and passed the curse to her family. As punishment, he became immortal and must watch every Harkin wedding.
When Rachel finds out she carries this curse, she faces an impossible choice. She can marry Nicky and hope he is her soulmate. If she is wrong, she dies. She can leave the wedding, but then the curse transfers to Nicky’s family. Or she can keep delaying the wedding forever. The pressure grows because Nicky’s mother Victoria (Jennifer Jason Leigh) has a terminal brain tumor, and this wedding is meant to be her final family celebration.
Why Rachel Decides Not to Change Herself
At one point, Rachel finds a way to survive. She learns she can drink a special potion that will turn her into Nicky’s perfect soulmate. The recipe requires her to chop off her own toe, which she does without hesitation. But at the last moment, she throws the potion away.
“She realizes the opposite of doubt isn’t certainty. It’s belief. You can’t be certain about any choice you make in life or what the outcome will be. So she takes that leap.” – Haley Z. Boston, show creator
Rachel decides she does not want to change who she is. She believes Nicky fell in love with the real her, not some made-up version. She chooses to trust that their connection is real.
The Bloody Wedding Massacre Explained
The wedding day arrives. Rachel says “I do” without hesitation. But Nicky freezes at the altar. He admits he pressured Rachel into marriage and suggests they drive away together without getting married. Rachel panics because she knows what will happen if the sun sets before they complete the ceremony.
The couple argues as the sun goes down. Nicky finally admits he never really believed Rachel about the curse. This moment makes Rachel realize Nicky is not her soulmate. If he were, he would trust her.
Once the sun sets without a completed marriage, the curse transfers to the Cunningham bloodline. Here is the terrifying twist the show reveals: the curse applies to all married Cunninghams, not just future ones. Anyone in Nicky’s family who married someone who is not their soulmate starts bleeding from their eyes, ears, and nose.
The wedding reception turns into a slaughter. Guests drop dead on the dance floor. Victoria, Nicky’s mother, dies. Portia (Gus Birney) , Nicky’s sister who had a secret Vegas wedding, also dies.
One Cunningham survives. Jules (Jeff Wilbusch) , Nicky’s older brother who is on the verge of divorce from his wife Nell (Karla Crome) , lives through the bleeding. His survival proves he and Nell are actually soulmates, even after years of marriage problems.
Rachel’s Death and Unexpected Return
Nicky realizes his mistake and tries to fix it. He forces a ring onto Rachel’s finger and says “I do” without her permission. This completes the marriage, but Rachel now doubts everything. She bleeds out alone in a snowy atrium while Nicky comforts his dying sister instead of her.
Rachel dies just like her mother did on her wedding day. But she does not stay dead.
The old Witness finally dies as the curse moves to the Cunninghams. Rachel wakes up as the new immortal Witness. She must now attend every Cunningham wedding for the rest of time. The old Witness leaves her a note written in blood that says: “Your turn.”
What the Creator Says About Rachel’s Fate
Boston explains that Rachel’s death represents the end of her old self and her relationship with Nicky.
“The whole story is a breakup story. So Rachel dying is the death of the relationship. It’s the death of her old self. And in order to move on, she had to be reborn. When you exit a relationship, you leave all that behind and you’re free, though not unscathed.” – Haley Z. Boston
The final shot shows Rachel driving away from the cabin alone. She smiles faintly to herself. She throws her wedding ring out the window. Boston says this moment is about Rachel choosing herself over a relationship that was not right for her.
