Sophie Turner stars in a new heist thriller, but her show, Steal, is not about perfect criminals. It is about ordinary people pushed to their limits. The Prime Video series focuses on the messy fallout after a huge crime, not the slick planning. Turner calls this focus on relatable people in an impossible situation a “refreshing” change for the genre.
The story begins when a gang of violent thieves storms a London pension fund company. They force office workers Zara, played by Turner, and her friend Luke, played by Archie Madekwe, to help them steal billions of pounds. The six-episode series then follows the chaos, fear, and secrets that explode in the days after the robbery.
Steal will be available to stream globally on Amazon Prime Video on January 21, 2026.
A Messy Heist Story With Complex Characters
Sophie Turner explains that what makes Steal stand out is its focus on character and consequence. Most heist stories build toward a big robbery. This one starts with one.
โThe heist happens right at the get-go. It follows the fallout from it, rather than the lead up. I was excited for that,โ Turner said.
This means the show spends its time on how the crime changes everyone involved. Zara and Luke are not career criminals. They are normal people who are suddenly in the middle of a dangerous crime scene. The show asks how they handle extreme pressure and what hard choices they make to survive.
Zara herself is described as a “total mess” in her personal life, dealing with family problems and trying to keep up appearances. Turner connected with this part of the role.
โI actually think I brought quite a lot of myself to Zara. As actors, and people in the public eye, you get used to putting on a frontโฆ So with Zara, I got to let out my inner mess,โ she said.
Archie Madekweโs character, Luke, reacts to the crisis differently. While Zara tries to fix things, Luke goes into full panic mode.
The Personal Connection To A High-Stakes Plot
The show’s tension feels real because its setting is real. The series was filmed on location in London, including places familiar to the cast. Turner said this made the story feel more personal and threatening.
โWe were filming on Columbia Roadโฆ Shooting MI5 coming into buildings, or the thieves robbing places that feel like home to us felt even more invasive, which lends to the plot, for sure,โ she explained.
The plot also connects to real-world issues. The thieves target a pension fund, stealing the retirement money of ordinary people. The actors talked about how the story touches on themes of wealth inequality and the stress of modern life.
โWe’ve got too many billionaires and the cost-of-living crisis [means] the disparity is too big, and the gap’s got to close,โ Turner noted about the show’s underlying themes.
Archie Madekwe added that the show explores why “good people do bad things” when they are desperate.
From Fantasy Epics To A Grounded Thriller
For Sophie Turner, famous for playing Sansa Stark in the fantasy epic Game of Thrones, this role was a major change. She said playing Zara was one of the most “freeing” experiences she has had. She did not have to wear period costumes or use a special accent. She could focus purely on the character’s emotions.
โIt felt like we could really hone in our focus on the story and not worry about if buildings look too new or old,โ she said about the modern setting.
She also found the intense, high-stakes filming days to be rewarding.
โI really thrive on days when it is a high-stakes day where it’s a lot of drama and a lot of emotion, and I actually find it quite cathartic,โ Turner shared.
The cast, which also includes Jacob Fortune-Lloyd as a detective with a gambling problem, worked closely together. Turner and Madekwe became friends on set, even passing time between scenes with karaoke and a toy bow and arrow.
