Fans of the animated Spider-Verse movies will have to wait a bit longer for the final chapter. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the third film in the series, has been delayed by three weeks. It will now release on June 25, 2027, instead of the original date of June 4, 2027.
The delay is a strategic move by Sony Pictures to maximize the movieโs success. The new date ensures that most schools in the U.S. will be on summer break, allowing more kids to watch the film. The studio also believes the late June release will perform better internationally.
Why the Delay Happened
The main reason for the shift is to attract a bigger audience. On June 4, only 65% of U.S. schools would have been closed for summer vacation. By June 25, 100% of schools will be on break, making it easier for families to watch the movie.
Another factor is the filmโs complex animation process. The Spider-Verse movies are known for their unique visual style, which takes a lot of time to perfect. The extra three weeks could help the team polish the final product.
“The new date gives us a better IMAX window and more time to make sure the film meets our high standards,” said producer Christopher Miller on social media.
What We Know About the Movie
Beyond the Spider-Verse is the final part of the trilogy that started with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and continued with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). The first movie won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, and the second was also a huge hit, earning $690 million worldwide.
The story picks up right where Across the Spider-Verse ended. Miles Morales is trapped in an alternate universe where another version of himself became the villain Prowler. Meanwhile, Gwen Stacy and other Spider-heroes are trying to rescue him.
“Gwen and his other friends may or may not be enough to help him save the family thatโs been the leading part of the entire system,” teased Phil Lord, one of the writers, at CinemaCon.
Past Delays and Future Plans
This isnโt the first time the movie has been delayed. Originally, it was set to release in March 2024, but the Hollywood strikes in 2023 caused major delays. Later, Sony announced a June 2027 release, which has now been pushed slightly further.
While waiting for Beyond the Spider-Verse, fans can look forward to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a live-action movie starring Tom Holland, set for July 31, 2026.
The Impact of the Spider-Verse Series
The Spider-Verse films have been a major success for Sony. The first movie made $384 million, while the sequel earned $690 million. Together, the two films have made over $1 billion globally.
The movies are praised for their groundbreaking animation and storytelling. Each film introduces new visual techniques, making them stand out from other superhero movies.
What Fans Can Expect Next
Though the delay is disappointing, the extra time could mean a better final product. The filmmakers have emphasized that they want to get everything right before releasing the movie.
No trailers or footage have been released yet, but fans hope to see a teaser in 2025 or 2026.
