The first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day has arrived, and it is packed with surprises. Tom Holland introduced the footage from the top of the Empire State Building on March 18, marking a major event for Marvel fans. The trailer has already broken records, racking up over 500 million views in less than 24 hours. This new chapter follows the heartbreaking ending of No Way Home, showing a Peter Parker who is completely alone. However, the trailer also reveals that he is not entirely disconnected from the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), featuring appearances from familiar heroes and exciting hints about what is coming next.

Four Years Later: A Lonely Start for Peter Parker

The trailer makes it clear that Brand New Day takes place four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Peter Parker made the choice to let Doctor Strange erase everyone’s memory of him to save the multiverse. Now, he lives alone in a small apartment, operating as a full-time Spider-Man without any support system.

A key moment in the trailer shows Peter watching a video of Zendaya’s MJ and Jacob Batalon’s Ned happily attending MIT. It is a painful reminder of what he lost, as neither of them remembers who he is. He also visits the grave of Aunt May, played by Marisa Tomei, highlighting how isolated he has become. The official synopsis confirms that Peter is now an adult, devoted entirely to protecting New York City, but the pressure is starting to cause a “surprising physical evolution” that could threaten his life.

Bruce Banner Returns as a Professor

One of the biggest MCU connections in the trailer is the appearance of Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner. However, he is not the “Smart Hulk” fans saw in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Instead, Bruce appears fully human again, wearing a device on his wrist to control his transformation.

Peter seeks out Bruce, who is now a professor at Empire State University (ESU), a fictional school from the comics. Peter asks for help understanding the strange changes happening to his body. This scene ties Brand New Day directly to the larger MCU, showing that even though the world forgot Peter, he still exists in a universe filled with other heroes.

Jon Bernthal’s Punisher Crashes the Party

Another major MCU return is Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher. The trailer features a brutal scene where The Punisher drives his iconic black van straight into Spider-Man. Interestingly, the two already seem to know each other. Spider-Man calls him “Frank,” suggesting this is not their first meeting.

Their interaction highlights the different styles of crime-fighting. While Spider-Man tries to stop a villain, The Punisher wants to kill him. This dynamic is a classic comic book rivalry, and it connects Brand New Day to the street-level stories being told in Daredevil: Born Again. The Punisher’s presence reinforces that this film is shifting away from multiversal threats to focus on grounded, New York-based conflicts.

Organic Webbing and Physical Mutations

A major talking point from the trailer is Peter’s “physical evolution.” In a shocking sequence, Peter collapses and wakes up inside a web cocoon on the side of a building. When he falls, he instinctively tries to fire a web despite not wearing his mechanical web-shooters. It appears that Peter is developing organic webbing, similar to Tobey Maguire’s version of Spider-Man.

This mutation is likely connected to a comic book storyline called “The Other.” In those comics, Spider-Man undergoes a metamorphosis that grants him new abilities like night vision and wrist stingers. The trailer shows Peter with blackened eyes and a scene where he seems to shatter a sword with his bare hands, hinting at these new powers. He even seeks out Bruce Banner because, as an expert on physical transformation, Bruce might be the only one who can explain what is happening.

Easter Eggs and Wider Universe Connections

The trailer is filled with subtle nods to the wider Marvel universe and comic book history. One scene shows a television broadcast where Spider-Man is receiving the key to the city from Sheila Rivera, a character from Daredevil: Born Again. This suggests the film acknowledges the political landscape of New York established in the Disney+ series, specifically Mayor Wilson Fisk’s anti-vigilante stance.

Additionally, the trailer features three distinct homages to classic Amazing Spider-Man comic book covers. There are recreations of Amazing Fantasy #15 (Spider-Man’s first appearance), Amazing Spider-Man #345, and Amazing Spider-Man #134.

Fans also spotted the return of Michael Mando as Mac Gargan, now fully suited up as the villain Scorpion, who was teased back in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Other villains like Boomerang and Tarantula make quick appearances, alongside ninjas from The Hand, connecting the film to the shadowy organization featured in the Netflix Daredevil series.

The Mystery of MJ and Sadie Sink

The trailer also teases Peter’s personal struggles. He sees MJ with a new man, played by Eman Esfandi, which adds to his loneliness. However, at the end of the trailer, MJ approaches Peter and calls him “friendly neighbor,” a wink to his classic title. This suggests that while she doesn’t remember their past, she might be suspicious of who he really is.

One notable absence from the trailer is Sadie Sink. The Stranger Things star has a major role in the film, but her character remains hidden. Speculation suggests she might be playing Jean Grey, a key member of the X-Men, especially given her red hair and the MCU’s plans to introduce mutants. The trailer briefly shows a young woman with red hair who appears to have telekinetic powers, leading fans to believe this is Sink’s character.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31, 2026. The film is part of the MCU’s Phase 6 and will be followed by Avengers: Doomsday later that year.
