Neon has dropped the first trailer for Splitsville, a comedy-drama about relationships and open marriages. The film stars Dakota Johnson, Adria Arjona, Kyle Marvin, and Michael Angelo Covino. It will hit theaters on August 22, 2025.

The story follows Carey (Kyle Marvin), whose wife Ashley (Adria Arjona) asks for a divorce. Carey turns to his friends Julie (Dakota Johnson) and Paul (Michael Angelo Covino) for advice. He learns their happy marriage is actually openโ€”until he crosses a line and causes chaos.

The trailer shows funny and dramatic moments, including fights, car crashes, and awkward conversations. It mixes humor with real emotions about modern relationships. The film premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it got strong reactions.

Michael Angelo Covino directed and co-wrote the film with Kyle Marvin. They previously worked together on The Climb (2019). The new movie explores jealousy, honesty, and what happens when people pretend to have everything figured out.

“Itโ€™s a bunch of people who are convincing themselves that theyโ€™ve figured it all out, only to go back to their childlike impulses,” Covino told Vanity Fair. “You realize, ‘Oh, no, Iโ€™m jealous. I still have these feelings.’”

The cast also includes Nicholas Braun (Succession), David Castaรฑeda, O-T Fagbenle, and Charlie Gillespie. The film is produced by Neon, Topic Studios, and TeaTime Pictures.

Early reviews from Cannes praise the filmโ€™s humor and performances. Critics say itโ€™s a smart, funny take on relationships, though some think it could be sharper. The trailer suggests a mix of physical comedy and emotional moments.

Fans of Dakota Johnson will see her in another relationship-themed movie after Materialists (2025). For Adria Arjona, this is her first film role of 2025 after starring in Andor Season 2.

The trailer opens with Ashley telling Carey she wants a divorce and has cheated on him. Carey then turns to Julie and Paul, who reveal their open marriage. Things get messy when Carey and Julie sleep together, leading to fights and jealousy.

“We are not monogamous,” Julie says in the trailer. The film explores how far people will go to avoid facing their true feelings. The trailer ends with a car crash, hinting at the chaos ahead.

Splitsville was shot on 35mm film, giving it a classic look. Covino uses long takes and natural camera movements to keep the focus on the characters. The style matches the messy, real-life emotions of the story.

The filmโ€™s release starts in select theaters on August 22 before expanding nationwide on September 5. Itโ€™s expected to be one of the summerโ€™s standout comedies.
