The NBC mockumentary comedy St. Denis Medical finished its second season on April 6, 2026, with an emotional episode titled “We Make Time.” The finale put Dr. Ron Leonard (David Alan Grier) in an unfamiliar position—as a patient waiting for heart bypass surgery. Meanwhile, Bruce Schweitz (Josh Lawson) became obsessed with the surgeon’s qualifications, and Matt Pearson (Mekki Leeper) tried to fix things with Serena Jung (Kahyun Kim) after their first kiss.
The episode aired on NBC at 8:00 pm ET/7:00 pm CT. New episodes also stream on Peacock after they air. The show already got renewed for a third season by NBC, set for the 2026-27 TV season.
Ron Hides From Everyone While Waiting for Surgery
The finale picks up right after the previous episode. Ron needs a triple bypass, but he does not want anyone to know he is in the hospital. Only Joyce Henderson (Wendi McLendon-Covey) knows where he is hiding. He made her promise to keep it a secret.
But Joyce has a hard time keeping her mouth shut. She tries to protect his privacy but keeps slipping up. At one point, she walks in on Ron at a bad moment, which creates one of the funniest scenes of the episode. The situation gets worse when she swears the rest of the staff to secrecy about Ron’s whereabouts—which basically guarantees everyone will find out.
Different staff members keep visiting Ron’s room. Some offer sympathy, others share unhelpful stories, and Brandon (Dan Leahy) tries to film TikTok content. Ron, who already has very little patience for emotional moments, quickly gets overwhelmed. Keith (Dave Theune) reads to him at one point, and Ron declares he has decided to die. David Alan Grier’s delivery of that line is perfect.
Bruce Becomes Obsessed With Emerson’s Vegas Trip
Bruce finds out that Dr. Brooke Emerson (Ariana Madix) is performing Ron’s surgery. He also learns she just got back from a bachelorette weekend in Las Vegas. This sends him into a full panic.
Bruce starts imagining all the crazy things Emerson could have done in Vegas. He questions her about her trip, but she points out that they went on four dates and he never once asked about her life. His questions always focused on whether his shirt was too tight for his biceps. Bruce even tries to test her reflexes by throwing a packet of M&Ms at her. When she barely reacts, he gets even more worried.
He eventually takes a hair sample from her, convinced it will show everything in her system. Emerson finds out when the lab emails her a full drug panel. She confronts him and makes it clear she would never risk a patient’s safety. Bruce finally admits the real reason for his worry—he cannot lose Ron. They are close, and he has lost people before. He does not want to go through that again. She allows him into the operating room to watch the procedure.
Matt Tries to Fix Things After the Kiss
Matt and Serena finally kissed in the episode before the finale. But Matt panicked right after. He said “see you Monday” and walked away. He waited two years to kiss the woman he had a crush on since starting at St. Denis, and then he messed up the moment completely.
Serena felt confused by his silence. She thought he was just as excited about the kiss as she was. But Matt kept overthinking everything and pulling away. The episode shows them trying to talk multiple times, but something always gets in the way.
When they finally sit down and talk, the moment works. They agree to start seeing each other for real. Show co-creator Eric Ledgin told TheWrap that the writers did not know if Matt and Serena would end up together in Season 1. But the actors’ performances made it feel right to move forward in Season 2.
The Staff Waits Together as Ron Has Surgery
The whole staff waits through Ron’s surgery together. Joyce, Alex (Allison Tolman), Val (Kaliko Kauahi), Bruce, Matt, and Serena all sit in the waiting area. Ron would probably hate all the attention, but the moment shows how close this group has become.
Alex earlier tried to organize a meal train and a get-well package for Ron. Val refused to sign a card because she prefers to assume the worst. She explained that if things go well, it is a nice surprise. If not, she has already accepted it. Matt turned his “M” into a butterfly on the card—funny but also kind of sweet.
Eric Ledgin told TheWrap that the goal was to show how the staff bonds when one of them goes down. He also praised David Alan Grier and Allison Tolman for a quiet, emotional scene where Alex really connects with Ron about his fears.

Ron’s Post-Surgery Confession Shocks Everyone
Ron gets through the surgery. But the biggest moment comes at the very end of the episode. As Ron wakes up from the anesthesia, still groggy and confused, he asks one question: “Where’s my Joyce?” Then he falls back asleep.
Alex and Bruce stand there in total shock. The show does not say if Ron actually has feelings for Joyce or if the drugs just made him say it. Ledgin told TheWrap that their relationship has always been a little messy. The line feels like it comes out of nowhere, but it also fits the messiness of their connection. Viewers will have to wait for Season 3 to find out what happens next.
