The Prime Video thriller Steal wrapped up its six-episode run with a finale that answered its biggest mysteries. The series followed office worker Zara Dunne, who became the central suspect in a massive ยฃ4 billion pension heist at her company, Lochmill Capital. The ending reveals not only the mastermind behind the crime but also why Zara was chosen, how an insider was involved, and what she and detective Rhys Covac decide to do next.

The Heist That Put Zara in the Crosshairs

The story begins with a violent, high-tech robbery at Lochmill Capital. A gang of thieves, using prosthetic masks to avoid facial recognition, storm the office and force employees Zara and her friend Luke to transfer ยฃ4 billion from pension funds. While Zara is hailed as a hero for keeping people safe during the crisis, she and Luke soon find ยฃ5 million each deposited into their accounts by the robbers.

This payment immediately makes them persons of interest. DCI Rhys Covac quickly suspects their involvement. As Luke buckles under the pressure and is kidnapped by the thieves, Zara is left alone, trapped between the police, the robbers, and MI5, who also take an interest in the case. To clear her name, she begins a dangerous partnership with Rhys, who is fighting to keep control of the investigation.

“The moment they would accept the bribe from Darren, they would be forever tied to him.” โ€“ Explanation of Zara’s final decision.

The Insider Question: Who Helped the Robbers?

From the start, it was clear the robbers had inside help. They knew the building’s security, the transfer procedures, and which employees to target. Rhys’s theory that there was an “inner connection” at the firm proves correct, but the truth is more layered than a single traitor.

Zara’s investigation leads her to Milo, a senior risk analyst at Lochmill. He admits he was also paid by the robbersโ€”ยฃ20 millionโ€”to adjust risk reports just before the heist, making the massive cash transfer possible. However, Milo is not the mastermind. He reveals to Zara that she and Luke were specifically chosen as additional insiders to be the “fall guys.” Their profiles as frustrated, relatively isolated employees made them perfect scapegoats to take the blame if the plan unraveled.

The Mastermind Revealed: Darren Yoshida’s Motive

The true architect of the heist is Darren Yoshida, the financial investigator assigned to help Rhys’s police team. Andrew Koji plays Darren, who appears as a calm, knowledgeable consultant throughout the series. In the finale, Rhys pieces together the clues: Darren rejected other cases to ensure he was assigned to this one, and he mysteriously failed to show up at a critical moment.

When confronted, Darren admits everything. His goal was never to keep the pension money. He orchestrated the ยฃ4 billion theft to create a sensational public story that would force authorities to investigate the offshore tax haven accounts where the money was briefly routed. By exposing the hidden wealth of billionaires and celebrities, he wanted to spark a larger conversation about financial corruption and inequality.

“The heist was about hurting the one percent that hoarded most of the wealth of the world.” โ€“ Darren Yoshida explains his motivation.

After achieving his goal of triggering a government inquiry, Darren returns the stolen pension money to Lochmill Capital. However, he keeps millions taken from the secret tax haven accounts, which he offers to Rhys and Zara.

The Final Choice: Walking Away from the Money

In the final confrontation, Darren offers Rhys and Zara a ยฃ10 million bribe from the tax haven funds to buy their silence. He argues the “polluted money” could be used for good. Despite Rhys’s severe gambling debts and Zara’s chance at a fresh start, they both refuse.

Zara convinces Rhys that taking the money would make them permanently indebted to Darren and compromise their freedom. They choose to walk away, leaving the money behind and deciding not to expose Darren to the authorities, acknowledging that his goal, if not his methods, was aimed at systemic change.

What Happens to Zara and Rhys After the Heist

With the heist case closed, the loose ends are tied up by MI5. The official story pins the blame on the deceased Milo, allowing Zara and Luke to go free. Zara is offered a new identity by MI5 but decides to stay in London.

In a final twist, Zara reveals to Rhys that she secretly kept Milo’s cold wallet, which contains ยฃ20 million in cryptocurrency. She had hidden it in a office trophy during the chaos, and it was unknowingly returned to her with her personal belongings. This money, untouched by Darren’s deal, gives Zara and Rhys a chance to fix their lives on their own terms.

The series ends with them leaving Lochmill Capital together, equipped with the financial means to start anew but with the shadow of Darren’s actions and their own choices lingering.
