  • Episode 5: “Shock Jock” – Directed by Frank Darabont. This episode starts right where Volume 1 ended. Darabont also directed Episode 3, “The Turnbow Trap,” in Volume 1, but the creators say he is doing something very different here. They describe “Shock Jock” as “far darker, and far scarier” than his previous work.
  • Episode 6: “Escape from Camazotz” – Directed by Shawn Levy. The Duffer Brothers call this “the biggest episode of the three” in terms of scale. They also noted that the performances in this episode are so powerful they make the team cry during reviews.
  • Episode 7: “The Bridge” – Co-directed by The Duffer Brothers and Shawn Levy. The creators are being careful not to give away too much about this penultimate episode. They say that, aside from the finale, it is likely “the most emotional chapter of the season.”.

The runtime for these episodes has not been officially announced, but the series finale on December 31 is confirmed to be 2 hours and 5 minutes long.

What the Creators Say About Volume 2

The Duffer Brothers have set clear expectations for the tone of the final episodes. Ross Duffer’s message highlights that the wait between Volume 2 and the finale will be tense, stating, “Itโ€™s gonna be a long six day wait for the finaleโ€ฆ”.

Jamie Campbell Bower, who plays the villain Vecna, also teased what’s ahead for his character. He said fans should “feel like what theyโ€™re doing is holding onto their chairs going, โ€˜No, no, no.โ€™” He described Volume 1 as an “explosive setup” for what happens in Volume 2 and the finale.

The creators have previously said the entire final season is like “eight blockbuster movies” but also their “most personal story.” They mentioned the production was emotionally intense, with a lot of tears on set, as they wrapped up a story they’ve been telling for nearly a decade.

Story Hints and What to Expect

While specific plot details are secret, the episode titles and comments offer some clues. “Shock Jock” suggests a focus on radio or broadcasting, which has been important in the show before. “Escape from Camazotz” points to a major struggle within Vecna’s mind prison, likely involving characters like Max Mayfield and Holly Wheeler. “The Bridge” could have a literal or symbolic meaning, connecting characters or worlds as the story builds to its end.

The return of the character Kali, also known as Eight, in Volume 1 is expected to significantly impact Eleven’s story. Matt Duffer said, “Kali shifts things a lot for Eleven,” and her involvement will change the tone of the story.

The full main cast returns for the final season, including Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, and Sadie Sink. New cast members for Season 5 include Linda Hamilton and Nell Fisher, who plays a more central role as Holly Wheeler.
