The world of Stranger Things is not ready to let go just yet. Less than three months after the final season wrapped up on Netflix, the streaming service has released the first full trailer for Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, an animated spin-off that is already creating heated discussions among viewers.
Set to premiere on April 23, 2026, this new series takes fans back to Hawkins during the winter of 1985, filling the gap between Season 2 and Season 3. But the trailer has opened up old wounds for some and raised serious questions about how this story fits into the larger Stranger Things universe.
What Exactly Is This New Animated Series?
Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 is an animated spin-off that brings back the original gang—Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and Max—for another adventure. The show is set in the winter following the events of Season 2, after Eleven closed the gate at Hawkins Lab.
The official synopsis explains that the horrors of the Upside Down are finally fading, and the kids have returned to normal life with Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, snowball fights, and quiet days. But something new has awakened beneath the ice, forcing the group to solve another mystery and save their town.
Showrunner Eric Robles leads the project, with the Duffer Brothers serving as executive producers alongside Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen. The animation comes from Flying Bark Productions.
The voice cast includes new actors taking over the beloved roles:
- Brooklyn Davey Norstedt as Eleven
- Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Max
- Luca Diaz as Mike
- Elisha EJ Williams as Lucas
- Braxton Quinney as Dustin
- Benjamin Plessala as Will
- Brett Gipson as Hopper
- Jeremy Jordan as Steve Harrington
The series also introduces a new character, Nikki Baxter, voiced by Odessa A’zion. Nikki is described as a tough, mohawk-wearing girl who becomes part of the action.
The Big Question: Is This Really Canon?
The trailer has sparked one major debate among fans: how does this story fit into the existing timeline without contradicting what happens in Seasons 3, 4, and 5?
Robles addressed this challenge directly in previous interviews. He explained that when the Duffer Brothers came to him with the idea, he told them, “Let me do some research on this. Let me really dissect the show, dig into my old memory vault of a lot of ’80s movies I used to watch, and see what I can piece together here.”
His solution involved finding loopholes in the existing story. “I dissected the show, looking for any loopholes,” Robles told Entertainment Weekly. “What is this big idea? Hawkins Lab science meets Upside Down matter. There’s a chain reaction to the creatures that are in our world and the things that are popping up.”
But some fans remain unconvinced. The trailer includes Mike saying, “The big snowstorm is coming next week — that’s when we’ll start the campaign.” This single line has led many to theorize that the entire animated series might actually be a Dungeons & Dragons campaign the kids are playing, rather than events that actually happened in the real Hawkins timeline.
One Reddit user wrote, “I have little faith, but I think it will be fun. That’s what I’m going for. Heard them say it’s supposed to be canon, but I’m going to view as it isn’t. If it turns out to be a dream or a D&D campaign and not real, even better.”
Why the Steve Harrington Scene Has Fans Worried
The trailer includes a moment that has frustrated many viewers. Steve Harrington appears and accidentally calls another girl by Nancy Wheeler‘s name. For fans who followed the complicated love triangle throughout the original series, this felt like a step backward.
Steve’s journey from high school jock to caring protector was one of the show’s most celebrated character arcs. By Season 5, both Steve and Nancy had made it clear they were moving on. Steve told Jonathan he and Nancy were never going to happen, and Nancy ended things with both Steve and Jonathan.
Seeing the animated series revisit this old tension has left some fans questioning why the creative team would reopen a chapter they thought was closed.
Early Fan Reactions Are Mixed
Social media lit up after the trailer dropped on March 25, 2026. The reactions show a divided fanbase.
Some viewers expressed excitement about returning to Hawkins:
“Can’t wait for this,” one fan wrote.
“I have never been so hyped! Seeing the party together makes me happy,” another added on YouTube.
“Ok, this looks promising, I will give it a watch bc im craving more st content!” a Reddit user commented.
Others praised the voice acting, with one fan noting, “The Dustin voice acting is nuts, like that’s literally Gaten.”
But criticism also appeared quickly. Some viewers expressed frustration with the new character Nikki. “Still have no idea why they felt the need to insert an entirely brand new character in the middle of all this. there’s already plenty of characters in the original cast to riff and play off of,” one fan commented.
Others were more direct in their disapproval. “We will not be watching if it’s directed by the Duffers,” one X user posted. “No one wants this,” another added.
Theatrical Preview Coming Before Netflix Release
For fans who want to see the series early, Netflix has partnered with AMC Theatres to offer a limited theatrical preview. On April 18, 2026, five days before the Netflix premiere, the first two episodes will screen in 34 AMC locations across 20 states, with two showings at noon and 3 PM local time.
Screenings will also take place at the Paris Theater in New York and Netflix House Philadelphia. The combined runtime for the first two episodes is about 55 minutes.
This is a much smaller scale compared to the Stranger Things Season 5 finale, which played in roughly 600 theaters nationwide and earned an estimated $20 million to $25 million at the box office.

What to Expect From the 10-Episode Season
Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 will consist of 10 episodes, all arriving on Netflix on April 23. The show explores a new threat that emerges in Hawkins during that winter period, with the creative team emphasizing that this format allows for storytelling without the limitations of live-action production.
The voice cast also includes Janeane Garofalo and Lou Diamond Phillips in unspecified roles, along with Robert Englund as Cosmo, Alysia Reiner as Karen Wheeler, Alessandra Antonelli as Nancy Wheeler, and Jack Griffo as Jeff.
For fans still processing the Season 5 finale, this animated series offers a chance to spend more time with these characters. Whether it will answer lingering questions or create new ones remains to be seen.
