Bandai Namco Entertainment announced a major new project for the Sword Art Online franchise. The company revealed Echoes of Aincrad, a new action RPG, and a 110-minute promotional anime titled Unanswered//butterfly. Both projects are set to launch in July 2026 .

The game will be the first in the franchise to let players create their own original protagonist. The special anime, produced by Polygon Pictures, tells a new story set during the original Aincrad arc .

Game Release Date and Platforms

Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad launches on July 9, 2026 in Japan and July 10, 2026 worldwide . The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam .

Standard editions are priced at $69.99. Deluxe and Ultimate editions will include additional content, with the Ultimate Edition featuring the special anime, digital soundtrack, and digital artbook .

First Customizable Protagonist in Franchise History

For the first time in a main Sword Art Online console game, players will not control Kirito or other established characters. Instead, they will create their own hero through an extensive avatar customization system .

Players design their protagonist’s appearance, select equipment, and choose weapons and skills that match their preferred playstyle. As they level up, they can adapt their attributes and unlock new abilities .

The game takes place inside the floating castle of Aincrad, where players must survive in a death game environment. Real-time combat requires strategic use of weapons and special skills .

Death Game Mode With Permanent Consequences

The game features a special mode called Death Game Mode. In this mode, if the player’s character dies, the save file is permanently deleted. This replicates the high-stakes premise of the original anime, where death in the game meant death in real life .

Players who purchase the Deluxe Edition get early access to this mode. Others must unlock it by playing through the main game first .

NPC Partner System

Players will not journey alone in Echoes of Aincrad. The game includes an NPC partner system where characters with different skills and abilities join the protagonist .

As the bond with a partner deepens, players unlock new skills and more powerful abilities. Choosing the right partner and customizing their skills becomes important for surviving difficult battles .

Unanswered//butterfly: 110-Minute Anime Special

The biggest surprise in the announcement is the 110-minute promotional anime titled Unanswered//butterfly. The feature-length special is produced by Polygon Pictures, the studio known for its work on Ajin: Demi-Human and BLAME! .

The anime serves as a promotional project for the game but tells a complete, original story set during the Aincrad arc. It will be included in select Japanese editions of the game, including the Ultimate Edition, Premium Edition, and Premium Edition Dengeki Special Pack .

Anime Story and Characters

Unanswered//butterfly follows two new characters, Emirun and Rex, who knew each other in the real world before being trapped inside Sword Art Online. They reunite by chance inside the death game and join a map exploration party to learn survival skills .

Their situation changes when they encounter a mysterious Player Killer known as the Black Swordsman. After their entire scouting party is wiped out, Emirun and Rex seek training from the prodigious swordswoman Asuna to avenge their fallen comrades .

The story explores the early days of the Aincrad death game from a new perspective, showing how ordinary players struggled to survive while Kirito and Asuna became legendary figures .

Voice Cast and Staff

The anime brings back familiar voices while introducing new cast members. Yoshitsugu Matsuoka reprises his role as Kirito, and Haruka Tomatsu returns as Asuna. New cast members include Tomoyo Kurosawa as Emirun and Koki Uchiyama as Rex .

The staff includes:

  • Director: Tadahiro “Tady” Yoshihira (Polygon Pictures)
  • Screenplay: Keisuke Makino and Tadahiro Yoshihira

Special Theater Screening Event

Bandai Namco announced a special event for May 9, 2026, where Unanswered//butterfly will be screened in theaters in Tokyo and Osaka. The event will have three parts, with the first part including a stage greeting with the cast .

Cast members scheduled to appear include Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, Haruka Tomatsu, Tomoyo Kurosawa, and Koki Uchiyama. The event is free for fans who purchase qualifying editions of the game and win the lottery for tickets .

Availability Outside Japan

As of now, Bandai Namco has only confirmed the anime’s inclusion in Japanese editions of the game. The company stated that Unanswered//butterfly is a promotional project that may be shown or distributed separately for promotional purposes in the future .

International release plans for the anime have not been announced. Fans outside Japan may need to wait for potential streaming announcements after the game launches .

Story Supervision by Reki Kawahara

Series creator Reki Kawahara oversees the story for Unanswered//butterfly. The anime presents a new perspective on the Aincrad arc, showing events that occurred alongside the original story .

The plot focuses on how regular players experienced the death game, providing context for Kirito’s rise as the legendary Black Swordsman. Asuna plays a major role as a mentor figure to the new characters .

Game Pre-Orders and Editions

Pre-orders for Echoes of Aincrad are now live across all platforms. Multiple editions are available:

Standard Edition ($69.99) includes the base game and pre-order bonus weapons .

Deluxe Edition includes the base game, Death Game Mode early access, expansion DLC, and a starter pack .

AnimeJapan 2026 Booth

Bandai Namco will showcase Echoes of Aincrad at AnimeJapan 2026, one of the world’s largest anime events. The booth will feature artwork by abec and distribute original double-sided B2 posters to visitors .

The event runs from March 2026, giving fans their first chance to see more of the game and anime before release .

Gameplay Details

Echoes of Aincrad features action RPG gameplay with real-time combat. Players explore diverse environments, from serene plains to perilous dungeons filled with secrets. They face monsters and bosses that require skill and strategy to defeat .

The game emphasizes exploration and character progression. Players can adapt and upgrade equipment, weapons, and attributes as they level up. Selecting special skills that match individual playstyles is key to success .

The world expands as the story progresses, unlocking new cities, environments, and dungeons filled with quests and rare loot .

Developer Background

The game is developed by Game Studio Inc. and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It follows Sword Art Online: Fractured Daydream, which released in 2024 .

Producer Yosuke Futami stated that the decision to let players create their own character aims to make the story more accessible for new players while offering longtime fans a fresh experience .

New Music for Both Projects

The theme song “Reach for the Rainbow” will serve as the insert song for both the game and the anime. The song is performed by the characters Iori and Lara, with vocals by Reia Kato and Rina .

A preview of the song is available in the Unanswered//butterfly introduction trailer released on March 6, 2026.

Looking Ahead to July

With both the game and anime releasing in July 2026, Sword Art Online fans have a major event to anticipate. Echoes of Aincrad offers a new way to experience the world of Aincrad, while Unanswered//butterfly provides over an hour and a half of new animation featuring beloved characters .

The combination of a customizable protagonist, permadeath mode, and a feature-length anime makes this one of the most ambitious Sword Art Online projects in recent years. Fans can expect more details leading up to the July release dates .
