Sydney Sweeney has announced she and co-star Glen Powell are ready to return for a sequel to their hit romantic comedy Anyone But You, but only if the right story comes along. The actress confirmed the potential follow-up project while also addressing the persistent dating rumors that surrounded the film’s original release.
The Official Sequel Update
Sydney Sweeney provided a clear update on the possibility of Anyone But You 2 during a recent interview. She expressed strong enthusiasm for reuniting with her co-star, indicating they are both actively involved in the early creative process.
The actress stated:
โI think that when the right concept and script come to Glen and I, we will jump in hand in hand.โ
Sweeney emphasized that she and Powell are always open to a sequel, but the project depends entirely on finding a story they are genuinely excited about. This mirrors her comments from March 2024, where she revealed they were dreaming up a bunch of different ideas for a potential sequel but had not yet settled on a final concept.
The original film, released in December 2023, was a major box office success. It grossed over $219 million worldwide against a modest $25 million budget, proving the lasting power of the romantic comedy genre.
Addressing the Dating Rumors
During the same interview, Sweeney directly addressed the widespread speculation about a romantic relationship between her and Glen Powell that circulated during the film’s promotional tour. She denied that she and Powell actively encouraged the rumors.
โThe press did it to themselves,โ Sweeney said. โThere was no leaning in, per se. Truly the tabloids and journalists just created it and kept going. Even if we were just standing next to each other, it was ‘They’re standing two inches apart!’โ
She clarified that their connection is purely professional and friendly, noting, โGlen and I genuinely care for each other and have a love and respect for one another. I love being with him. And I think people just truly saw a really beautiful pairing.โ
These rumors had previously caused public strain, as Powell’s ex-girlfriend, Gigi Paris, criticized him for not shutting down the speculation while they were still dating. Powell later responded that everyone is entitled to their own narrative after a breakup.
A Look Back at the Original Film
Anyone But You is a modern retelling of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. The film follows Sweeney’s character, Bea, and Powell’s character, Ben, two former college enemies who reconnect at a destination wedding in Australia. After a disastrous first date, they decide to fake a relationship to keep the peace at the wedding, only to find their pretend romance might be more real than they thought.
Directed by Will Gluck, the movie’s success was fueled by the undeniable on-screen chemistry between its leads. Powell himself had acknowledged the importance of this chemistry, once stating that โthe two things that you have to sell a rom-com are fun and chemistry,โ and crediting Sweeney as being โvery smartโ in their approach to marketing the film.
The film became a streaming sensation after its theatrical run, repeatedly topping charts on both Netflix and Prime Video.
While fans wait for more news on the sequel, Sweeney’s upcoming projects include the biographical drama Christy, where she portrays boxer Christy Martin. Glen Powell will next be seen in The Running Man reboot.
