Taylor Sheridan, the creator of the hit Paramount+ series “Special Ops: Lioness,” surprised audiences by stepping in front of the camera for a significant role in Season 2. The Yellowstone mastermind, known for his work behind the scenes on numerous hit shows, played CIA operative Cody Spears across multiple episodes of the espionage thriller’s second season.
Sheridan’s appearance was not a brief walk-on. He featured prominently in the Season 2 premiere and returned for key moments throughout the season, including the explosive finale.
Sheridan Plays Delta Force Operator Cody Spears
In “Special Ops: Lioness” Season 2, Sheridan took on the role of Cody Spears, a Delta Force unit leader assigned to support CIA operations. His character first appears in the season premiere episode titled “Beware the Old Soldier” and continues in the second episode, “I Love My Country”.
Spears is a battle-hardened operator who has worked with Zoe Saldaña’s character, Joe McNamara, on previous missions. He leads a small team and provides tactical support, including sniper roles in later action sequences. The character is described as a grizzled “man hunter” who brings practical experience to the team’s dangerous operations.
The premiere episode sees Cody, Joe, and their team mount a rescue mission to retrieve Congresswoman Hernandez, who had been captured by the Los Tigres Cartel. Sheridan also returned as Spears in Episode 8 during Operation Sky Hawk, flying in to assist the Quick Reaction Force when they faced a difficult situation.
Cast Members Share Their Experience Working with Sheridan
The cast of “Lioness” had plenty to say about working with their creator as a scene partner. Zoe Saldaña, who plays the lead role of Joe, described Sheridan as intense but dedicated.
“He’s intense in all the right ways. He cares a whole lot and he’s very invested, so he’s all-in at all times. That gives way for a challenge, which means you have to come prepared and you have to step up and know exactly what you’re doing, because he sure does.”
Saldaña admitted that sharing scenes with Sheridan was nerve-wracking at times. She recalled a particularly memorable moment during filming in Texas when Sheridan cranked up the heat in an SUV to make everyone appear sweaty and intense for a scene.
Nicole Kidman, who plays Kaitlyn Meade in the series, also praised Sheridan’s work ethic and presence on set.
Actor Thad Luckinbill, who plays Kyle in the series, spoke about Sheridan’s consistent approach regardless of his role on set. He told The Hollywood Reporter:
“He’s so real. Whether he’s an actor, writer, director or a producer, he’s still the same guy. He’s gonna give you the same opinions, and he cares the same about the product. So it doesn’t really change. He is who he is and you get it. He’s full access.”

This is not the first time Sheridan has appeared in one of his own shows. He previously made cameo appearances in “Yellowstone” as horse breeder Travis Wheatley and in the prequel series “1883” as Charles Goodnight. In “Yellowstone,” his character has been involved in storylines including horse auctions and, more recently, a strip poker scene that drew mixed reactions from viewers.

The creator’s on-screen appearance generated plenty of discussion among fans and critics. The season explores hidden networks, foreign operatives, and personal betrayals. Joe continues to balance her duty to her country with protecting her loved ones as mysterious enemies operate from the shadows.
The series has been a significant success for Paramount+. The Season 2 premiere pulled in 12.4 million multiplatform viewers globally, making it one of the biggest premieres for the streaming service.
Real-World Connections in Lioness Storylines
Sheridan recently discussed how some of the show’s storylines have aligned with real-world events. During an appearance on “The Joe Rogan Experience,” he talked about the Season 2 storyline involving cartels being designated as terrorist organizations.
Sheridan said he tries to guess what will happen politically and then fictionalizes those predictions. He was so certain the cartel storyline might be controversial that he expected to face backlash, but instead found that the real world caught up to his writing. The “Lioness” Season 2 finale released just a month before the U.S. government officially designated cartels as foreign terrorist organizations in January 2025.
“The fact that I’ve managed to be right is pretty wild,” Sheridan said.
