The trailer for Tell Me Lies Season 3 has arrived, showing Lucy and Stephen’s toxic romance reigniting just as a secret from their past explodes at a friend’s wedding. Hulu released the preview on December 17, setting the stage for the show’s return on January 13, 2026.
This new season picks up immediately after Stephen’s shocking act of revenge. At the end of season two, he sent Bree a recording of her fiancรฉ, Evan, confessing he once slept with Lucy. He sent this on Bree’s wedding day. The fallout from this will drive the story in both the past and present timelines.
What the Season 3 Trailer Shows
The trailer opens with a distressed Lucy recording a video message. “I need to apologize to everyone, so I am making this tape to say that I am so sorry,” she says tearfully. This apology hints at a major controversy she is involved in.
Despite the chaos, Lucy and Stephen are back together. In the trailer, they are in bed, and Lucy tells him, “We have to be nice to each other this time.” She admits her friends think she is “crazy” for returning to him. However, Stephen’s motive is not love. He explicitly states, “I want to hurt you and I don’t know how else to do it”. His anger stems from learning that Lucy and Evan had a secret encounter years ago.
The drama extends beyond the central couple. Lucy’s friend Bree is seen struggling with the aftermath of her affair with her married professor, Oliver. New characters will add more complexity. Costa D’Angelo joins as Alex, a psychology student with a complicated link to Bree. Iris Apatow will play Amanda, a freshman hiding a big secret.
The Story Ahead: Wedding Fallout and New Secrets
The official story description confirms that Lucy and Stephen have rekindled their relationship for the spring semester at Baird College. While they promise change, “past indiscretions hinder their best intentions”. Lucy gets pulled into a controversy she wants to avoid, while all their friends are forced to face their own destructive actions.
A key question from the season two finale will be answered: who was the private number calling Bree repeatedly on her wedding day? Showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer confirmed this mystery will be solved in season three.
The show will continue to move between two timelinesโ2008 during college and 2015 around the time of the wedding. However, the balance will shift. “By the third season, we will still have some 2008 because thereโs stuff that we have to wrap up there. But I think it would be a bit shiftedโฆ there will probably be more 2015 than 2008,” Oppenheimer told Variety.
The cast has teased that this season will be intense. Grace Van Patten, who plays Lucy, said the new season “feels like the peak of all these young peoples’ worst decisions”. Tom Ellis, returning as Professor Oliver, called it “probably the darkest season of Tell Me Lies so far”.
